Auto Update

  • Ram Diesel

No it's not a commentary on Windows SUS or the update or even the changes in daylight savings time (have you checked your servers' time?). It's the semi-when-I-feel-like-it auto update as in car update. If you suffer through the daily ramblings here you know that occassionally I talk about cars. Probably too much, but I've gotten quite a few emails from you that you like it, so here goes.

Last week was a change out here at the Colorado office of SQLServerCentral.com. The image above (or to the right, depending on your resolution) is my wife's new Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine (insert manly grunts here). That Hemi thing she had wasn't towing the friendly-odor-producing beasts around too well, so we've been searching for a replacement.

Surprisingly enough, I got quite a bit of advice from Chris S here on the site. He pinged me about changing the forums to not pop a new window on replies (anyone notice that?) and pointed me to http://www.dieseltruckresource.com as an example. Of course I pinged him on diesel trucks and got a "Dude, I love my diesels more that SQL." back. We corresponded a bit and I researched trucks and found a nice one for sale that we snapped up.

Anyone want to buy a Hemi?

Last week was also the 77th International Motor-Show in Geneva. The "green" hybrid and electric cars made a splash. You can see some cool images at C|Net. I kind of like the first one, the Toyota concept. The Honda's aren't bad, but they're on my bad side, so no Honda's for me. Speaking of which, anyone want to purchase an Odessey?

And I have to make a quick mention of Søren N's car. He sent me a picture of his Honda, shown here, which is a very cool ride. Not sure it's as much fun as my 911, but it looks good.

So that's the car update and I'll jump back to the DBA world for those of you that aren't interested, but suffered through this.

If you missed it, Service Pack 2 was re-released last week to correct the issues with maintenance plans. Be sure you get the updated version, or just download it again and toss your other copies. The other big thing to be aware of is now SQL Server 2005 is Vista compatible. I've been waiting for this to install Vista on a machine and start working with it, so there's no excuses now. Go ask your boss for that new laptop!

  • I am not sure I can run Vista without at least 1gig of new ram because I have Visual Studio Team System, Oracle 9i, SQL Server 2005 Developer with 1gig of ram everything is so slow, I am thinking Vista will shut me down although some of the other developers run Vista now.  New laptop I think we can only change when it is time for Dell to replace them, the problem with big companies.

    Kind regards,
    Gift Peddie

  • I've heard Vista is "usable" with 1GB. Luckily I've got 2GB sitting around

Yes I noticed it.  I found it a little annoying at first because I often need to reread many previous answers to formulate my own.   But since I can right-click and open the new post in a new window I'll be alright .

P.S.  When will the autosave feature will be on for our new messages (live save the text to cookie before submitting the form, check if cookie exists when the new post page reopens (with a delete of the cookie when the thread is reloaded "on the other side").

Also I'm still waiting to have the e-mail notifications shooting me straight to the actual new post on the correct page instead of page one.

  • While you're car shopping, there's always this one:

Though I won't be buying one (my two vehicles are an 89 Wrangler and 71 Chevy camper-- no plans to drive anything made this century at any time soon)

  • Now that's a great car! Shame they're £800,000 otherwise I'd definitely get one (yeah, right - maybe if the price dropped by two orders of magnitude).

Fastest thing I've ever driven is my now sadly defunct 1993 300ZX TT. Granted it's nothing compared to a Veyron, but for a couple of years it kept me very happy, until that is it went very expensively wrong. Now it just sits on the driveway looking black and cool, but is entirely useless.

  • And the first Veyron accident
