I am admittedly ignorant of HaDoop - your editorial is the first I've heard of it. Your description reminds me of Madison, though - Microsoft's release of DatAllegro. It treats individual SQL Server servers as nodes... </OverSimplifiedDescription>

I think it's similar, but it seemed to be more like a high powered SSIS or cube calculation system. Handle lots of aggregations in a short period of time. I'll admit that I have more to learn, and Google has a week long course called MapReduce in a week (http://code.google.com/edu/submissions/mapreduce/listing.html) that I'd like to get through and learn more.
