I've tried Visio a few times, have not tried Erwin. EM is slightly frustrating as far as the diagramming at times - would be nice to have a diagram that showed relationships without actually enforcing them. I know my dbs "should" have foreign keys but it's not always the case, yet I'd like to have a diagram that shows what they "should" be!
Overall I dont see it being a bad idea to "model" a db by actually creating it in EM (or whatever tool). I like to work with tables, run a few queries - helps me think it through. Perhaps I have not reached the 7th level of zen modeling yet.

I pretty much stick with EM or Visio for modeling, mainly because those are the choices I'm limited to. Neither one really suits my fancy because there's a lot I wish both would do. However, they are tolerable, especially considering the price tags of the alternatives.
