Agreed, cursors have their place, there just is just a lot of places where they are inappropriate.
IMO, the best place for cursors is in other peoples code... when they are paying you $100+/hr to fix their performance problems! :w00t: 😀

Makes you wonder... Here, the OP (with 1800+ points) can't pull apart two simple nested cursors with 5 subqueries in that last nest into some reasonable code. And here, he seems to know what he's talking about. :w00t:And he considers what you wrote "complex"??????
If you wanted to be evil, you could wrap Wayne's elegant code in a cursor, lob the grenade into a forum, and watch everyone duck for cover. That being said, I have come around...in that rare case, every so once in a while, when there is NO set based solution, a cursor will do. (there...I said it :w00t: )
elegant????? Don't know 'bout that!

@Lynn: May I take a break at the TITD? I'd even walk the hippo, if needed...I need to take a break and relax before I cannot resit anymore to post something I have in mind regarding this post ...
Go for it! I know where you are coming from. Individual PM'ed me to look at another thread where I was easily able to help him, for the most part. Stopped dealing with the thread when he wanted to move the asp.net app into tsql.

Awesome!
By the way, did you see the latest post?
You guys have more patience than I. That series would have torqued me off pretty good.
