Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Did any of you Water Coolers give the person who posted the request, an answer? I would venture to say no. I am not a troll whatever that means. I just reead the post yesterday morning and saw the bitching session and perhaps I could have been more tactful in my approach, but I guess since this is the place to vent, as all of you have told me, I just championed the underdog.

I would have done the same for any of you. Sorry if I offended you. Sincerely.

Out of curiosity, just what are you talking about? What question are you refering to?

If it was the CTE question, that one was answered.

  • If the truth be known, I too agree that a person should strive to solve a problem no matter what it is, by due diligence and at the very least, show some initiative...if it truly matters to them. I know how hard we all study to stay current and I too would shun laziness too. As most of you could see, I had never posted a response here before. Guess you know why... I want to extend a sincere apology to all of you...especially those of you who felt strong enough to reply and to those of you who were eqqually ticked off at me. Guess I too was having a bad day and needed to stop by th water cooler. I just want to say..sorry.

  • Someone gave an example about a DBA asking a basic question that was readily available to him or her that was easily solved by a little of effort. Hence the subject of the thread. All I'm trying to say is that I was wrong for chiming in the way I did.

  • I guess I have made a great first impression huh? Sorry. Sincerely. You all, through you persistence and me reflecting on all of your words to, prompted me to say that I'm sorry and thank you all. Good night.

  • I would still like to know which question you were refering to initially.

  • This thread is a little different than most the threads on this site. It takes a while to really understand it for what it is. I actually started reading and participating in it a few months ago. I went back and read it from the beginning. There are a lot of inside jokes that the only way to understand them is to read through the whole thread and then some still won't be comprehendible because they refer to other threads. What I've found is a group of people who are willing to help any OP even when the OP doesn't deserve the help. They may complain about it here but sometimes this thread helps behind the scene.

It's also a place to interact with highly qualified SQL Professionals, really this whole site not just this thread is that place. In my last 2 jobs I was surrounded by other DBAs. In my current job I'm a lone wolf and appreciate the comradery I get here.

The people here don't exclude anyone, especially if they're willing to put in the work. Since it appears you're new to SSC let me welcome you here. Make sure to check out the articles and participate in the Questions of the Day. The best part of this site is the discussion on the articles and the QOD, I learn more from the discussions then from the actual articles. There is truly something for every level of SQL user.

Well said and well taken. Sometimes things are taken too far on both sides of the fence but that's human nature and it either gets worked out or it doesn't. Most folks on this forum, especially the heavy hitters that frequent this watering hole, strive to give the very best answer possible even when the OP is, ummmm.... shall we say, less than diligent and a whole lot less than "friendly".

Like one of the heavy hitters has in his tagline says, "No one knows the actual age of the human race but everyone agrees it's old enough to know better."

    Welcome aboard. 🙂

Yep... me too. If anyone knows the URL, please post it... it appears there may be a lesson or two to learn from it one way or the other.

I don't know about all this.

There was merit in your original post - it was just worded a little strongly, perhaps. Don't overdo it with the apologising 🙂

For what it's worth, I tend to agree with the "if you don't have something positive to contribute, move along" philosophy - though I have on occasion diverted from it myself 😉

    Hi,

anybody of you folks influenced by the volcano eruption on Iceland?

I haven't been hit by it yet, but I'm supposed to be flyin from ACE to MAN next Tuesday and it's just guesswork whether I will be screwed by the ash or not.

Tom, just out of curiosity, what does your signature mean? I think it's Scot-Gaelic and you look very Scottish (my Scottish uncle could be your lost twin...).
