My pet peeve of the day. OP's who do not read through the solutions provided and keep posting.Any OP in particular?
Actually I have experienced more than 1 today which is why it is my pet peeve of the day. Of course it drives up my point total as I re-post something someone else has already posted, of course I always credit the original post. No plagiarism from me.
For the 3rd time Jack, WHAT THREADS...if only you were following yourown advice!!!!!

I have to agree on reading books. I have a bunch of books I keep in my car (my portable library) so I can have them at work and home if needed. However, not everyone has gone out and purchased the various books that are available and only have the forums and BOL to rely on, however, that doesn't mean they should avoid BOL in favor of the forums.Sometimes it helps to at least try to use BOL first. If you can't find it, then ask for help but be sure to say "I can't find it in BOL." It's just like going to the Microsoft KnowledgeBase, I have used it many times, and there were times at my last employer I could spend an hour looking for something, go to a co-worker and in 5 minutes he'd bring me 3 or 4 articles related to what I was looking for and couldn't find.
They may have a problem finding what they are looking for in BOL, but then asking for help could show them where it is and how to find it. It sometimes comes down to knowing "how" to ask the question, not "what" question to ask.
In addition, if they make the attempt to find the answer themselves and can't, I'm more willing to help than if they just come looking for the answer without any effort of their own.
That's pretty much precisely the point I'm making on BOL. If, in the example I wrote up, someone had said, "check out getdate() in BOL", I'd have had my answer fast.

I'm also sure if you said, "I've been looking in BOL and just can't seem to find anything." You'd get a better response than just "Look in BOL."
All I'm saying, and I think you'll agree, is that people need to make some kind of effort to help themselves before just asking for the answer.
That's pretty much precisely the point I'm making on BOL. If, in the example I wrote up, someone had said, "check out getdate() in BOL", I'd have had my answer fast.

I figured that since the answer has been given they don't need anymore help. It was just a general pet peeve as well as it happens on a regular basis.
In one case the person finally got it, in the other I have to assume they did as they have not posted in awhile.

Since this thread seems to be the most popular, a question:
What features would really help you "high posters" here at SSC? Changes to the forums? the site?
A few I've seen requested:
- More threads listed in the Active threads link
- Add a thread to your briefcase
- bundle notifications (by hour/day)
- code formatting (cut / paste and/or color coding)
Others?

The most annoying thing in the forums is that I can't post XML in them. Some solutions/answers require XML, and I have to resort to attaching text files, or doing weird things with curly braces or some such.
If that's not something you can fix, that's fine, but it sure would be helpful sometimes.
Something else that would be really useful to me would be if the subscriptions page (in account management) had a way of indicating if there's been any new traffic on the subscription, like the regular forums do, and had a link to the latest page, like the regular forums do. Perhaps a filter for the forums for subscribed threads, similar to the Active Threads filter. I don't use the e-mail notifications, because I post too much and would be flooded if I did, but I do use the subscribed threads list in account management (have it in my favorites). But it doesn't list pages and doesn't highlight to indicate new activity since last visit.

Code formatting for me.... Not that I write lots of Code, but I do look at lots of code and learn.. π
There was one thing that was bothering me when I am writing a Syntax. That is if I use the "Less than" and "Greater Than" symbol to denote Server Name or Table Name to be replaced with your own, that part just vanishes from the post. If that could be fixed, it would be great.

The less-than-greater-than thing is the same issue I have with XML disappearing.

The XML thing will be included with trying to fix the code formatting. I have some development resources coming available next month, so I'm trying to focus them on a few things.
The subscriptions is interesting. Not sure I can change that page, but perhaps give you another view of it.

I would like to see an improved display of the Active Topics to show the entire title that shows when the post is displayed in the forum. Many posters put vital information in the title that we cannot see in the Active Topics list. The ability to see more posts per page would be nice also.
It would nice to have a personal Active Topics to be able to filter out forums that I never answer questions about. Maybe βMy Active Topicsβ? However, I would still want to be able to see an unfiltered Active Topics.
Where the Forum shows the post author info, I would like to be able to see the post count of the author in addition to or in place of the points and visits count.

I know I mentioned this in a suggestion post, but on the Authors pages I'd like to see both the total number of views and the number of views in the past 30 days. Currently you only see the total, and have to view your article to see how many views in the last 30 days, whichs adds another view to each total.
Viewing 15 posts - 1,411 through 1,425 (of 66,712 total)
