Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Tammy,

WELCOME!!! You might be a newbie, but it looks like you've got the right attitude to deal with your issues.

As it so happens, you've stumbled upon our "water-cooler" thread, where we go to vent about things or to ramble on about things in general. We try to keep technical stuff out of here (though they do get in from time-to-time). It would be beneficial to find the appropriate forum to post your issues in... many people with expertese in certain areas hang out in those forums to be able to help people faster.

Ask away... there are many people out here that will help you, especially when you can show what you've tried.

    Thanks Lynn.

I have to agree with the others in that thread - I don't see the relevance to a Masters Degree and I don't see why the person would need somebody else to do it all for him.

    Let's see:

    Lazy, Incompetent, PHB.

    Care to add a few?

Edit: Quote bug got me. Had to fix... 😛

Just had a guy today who posted a whole exam, which he says "a friend needs for his masters program".

Where is that one? I think it might be fun - not to answer - to evaluate (insert devil emoticon).

    Here.

Wonder what university the degree is from.

There were plenty of times that I felt the same way. Now looking back on it and reflecting on what that "Masters" dude is getting, I think I got a lot for my money 😉

  • At least I found SSC. Learned more about SQL and about how to learn and act professionally than I am either in school or at work.

(Plus, I get to learn about swords, horse manure, sentient forums, slingshots ....too many things to name...)

Actually I agree with you regarding learning here in SSC. It has saved my bacon couple of times.. 🙂

    You talkin 'bout me? :w00t:

Seriously, this is so true. I've been developing against SQL since 6.5, but I've learned more in the last 2.5 years (since I found this site) than in all the other years... combined. And, IMO, the secret is to get involved and answer questions / write articles. And to be open to new ideas.

    Dear Experts -

A friend of mine has an exam and job interview interview coming up soon.

I got a copy of the exam ahead of time, and do not understand the questions about DBCC Timewarp and pork chop launchers.

Plz Help ASAP - this is an emergency.

    TIA,

    ;-):hehe:

Seriously - lots or great things to explore and learn from on this site. Some great minds willing to teach someone who wants to learn. A newbie who reads what they are pointed to, gives all the suggested sample info, can get a lot of quality help.

    Thanks,

    Greg E

  • I SERIOUSLY wish I'd had access to this site when I first started out. Unfortunately, it didn't exist yet.

I learned more in my first year here than I did in all the years prior to that. Well, about SQL and a few non sequitur subjects.

Hmmm .... new 4LA, "NSQL", "Non-Sequitur Query Language". Defined as a method to read the contents of The Thread. I like it!

Looking at the username, I found this on Google: www.lsbu.ac.uk. It looks like they do use MSC as an abbreviation for one of their degrees.

  • Thanks for all the replies!

I am genuinely grateful for the help I've received so far, and I look forward to the point where I can take what I've learned and help other newbies in this forum.

Even if it takes months and months, I plan on contributing as much as I can when I've learned enough to give a helpful response.

    Thanks again!

    Tammy 😀

  • @Tammy --SSC is an awesome site. Don't worry about being a "newb". There isn't a person out there who hasn't been a "newb" at one point. SQL Server is now broad enough that many of us who have been doing this a long time are "newbs" in certain areas that we haven't had the chance to deal with yet.

Sounds like you are like many of us "Accidental" DBA. The goal is to become and exceptional DBA. I may suggest you read Brad M. McGehee book on becomming an exceptional DBA. I believe it is a free pdf download. [/url]
