Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • And none of them worth the paper they are printed on I'd guess.

...and - we're doing it again. By virtue of this thread alone - we're HIGHLIGHTING the "ugly threads" which mean they get more facetime, and (probably) more answers than they usually would....:)

True enough... but think of this thread like you would a bar... good place to comiserate. Good friends that have gone through the same kind of hell talking about the different colors of hell... πŸ˜›

But, you're right... I think it was Churchill that said something to the effect of "When you're going through hell, keep going." :hehe:

You guys have a great Thanksgiving.

Oh I get that (really - I do!!!). I was just amused by the irony...

The turkey (and the first of many sandwiches) was wonderful - I hope it was good for all!

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • I am thinking to have a message box pop up when the user clicks β€œAdd Topic” (and "Add Reply"?) saying something like this:

    /***

This forum encourages SQL Server professionals to share knowledge and help each other. Please specify your question clearly to get better help, etc.

    ***/

Of course to have a check box available β€œDo not show this message again”. Hope this helps to filter out some unclear questions.

And/or once a new user registered, should have a SSC readme which includes the general rules/protocols of this site before s/he get into this site?

  • You can do all that, but most people just won't read the rules/ideas/hints, and just post a question.

BWAAA-HAAA! New candidate for the Pork Chop Award... look at the question and then look at the certs this guy boasts in his signature...

Though, if you look, most of those certs are not SQL related...

There's also a lot of redundancy, which I see a lot of people doing when they list certs. Makes me think that the point is to make the list as long as possible. Or maybe to make people's eyes glaze over

MCP is the base 'cert' and is got when you write a single exam. The presence of any other cert implies MCP. It's much like someone writing B.Sc, M.Sc, PhD. If they have a PhD, they have to have the Bachelors.

I have a macro tool on my home pc where I can easily put in some pre-written answers. I'll see if I can find a site for it. When I get home, that it.

That would be great to have. Certainly will reduce my time on-line. Look forward to seeing it somewhere.

Clippings. It's a firefox add-in (for Firefox version 3), so anyone using IE (Why?) is out of luck.

It's a lovely little tool. You can either type in a new clipping, or create one from the clipboard, and all the clipping that you have appear in a sub-menu on the context-popup (right click in a text area), or you can set a shotcut key, for those who prefer keyboard to mouse..

True enough... but they are suppose to imply the ability to think and do a little research on your own. πŸ˜‰

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

Thanks Gail, fortunately I almost exclusively use FireFox so this will work great for me.

    Yeah, right....

They imply you memorized some canned answered and/or went to boot camp.

Remember posting on SSC and having someone supply what you need is research to some people.

There's a frighteningly small percentage that actually studied the material. Not many, but there are some.

I know one for sure, co-worker at my last employer. Studied for each exam, passed and went on, and got his MCSE in 8 weeks. He studied his butt off, and he really knows his stuff well. If I were looking for a Network/Systems Engineer he would be at the top of my list.

  • I don't really have a problem with someone who has a bunch of certs asking questions on methodology or approach. IIRC, the certs don't really test for that sort of thing anyway. Besides, none of those letter after their name spells "MVP", so those who do might want to cut him some slack. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, those ones don't bother me much. It's ones were we have to spend literally DAYS trying to drag out of them the one relevant fact that will help us to solve their problem.

Or we tell them the fix for their problem and they refuse to listen for weeks, trying everything else except what we are telling them to do. Then they try it and it immediately fixes all of their problems! :w00t:

Or we spend many hours of our own time to solve a problem on one of the 2005 boards, only to have them say "I'm getting a syntax error. does it matter that I'm on SQL Server 2000?" AAaahhhh!!! "Yes! It matters! That's why we have separate forums!" (why don't we have a "Hitting head on wall" smiley?) Anyway, now I try to remember to always ask for the version before I start something that looks big.

I'm not complaining about the question. imho, that's not a simple question and it doesn't have an immediately apparent answer.

I'm just commenting on the laundry list, and not specifically on his sig either.

I just find it pretentious to list all those certs. It begs the question, who is he trying to impress. All those certs don't really mean anything to me until I understand what he really knows. I'll be honest I know some paper MCDBA's that like to throw around their cert, but they don't know what they need to know to really do their job.
