You've got to be kidding me....
I am, uh, um, not sure what to make of that. All I can say is ouch.

That was a pretty good one. He gives the obvious answer and still ask the question.. π
I like to help, but I am very very bad at explaining. I usually give a one line answer. I dont think I am helping the person. Someone else after that will explain what I meant. I have to work on my answering skills I guess... π

I think of it like a Cub Scout, Do Your Best. I try to help out. Sometimes I get it right. Sometimes I don't. It's an honest and earnest effort. That's about as far you need to go as I see it.

I'm pretty much like GSquared just said, but I have 1 thing to add.How much information I'm ready to pass on also depends on how busy I am at the time.
Of course, that's when I kick myself for having spent half an hour on a poorly stated problem that the OP doesn't even seem to have attempted but which looks interesting, i.e. you read it and think something like "I'm sure I can do that without explicit temp tables if I join the table to itself twice and then filter on ..."! π

I've been trying to stay away from this thread, but here's one:
I tried to help him out with that one Grant. Maybe because it's early and I'm well rested. I read him as saying "I would normally create a temp table but I can't... how else can I approach my problem?" I can think of a couple of UGLY ways to do it so I threw them out there, even though I'm unfamiliar with compact edition.
The problem is that the OP didn't say WHY he needed a temp table. It could be that all he needs is a subquery/derived table.

True. That's why I mentioned nested queries. We'll have to see what the OP says.

Hey, sorry to bug you, but have you cut through all the work yet? If it hadn't been your comment about Jeff's running total process not working on pertitioned tables, I'd never have thought of writing the article I wrote.
Not quite. I'm flying home tomorrow (from a two week business trip). I'm trying to keep next week relatively free to catch up on threads here, your article, two articles that I'm writing and my thesis.

I want to do a PhD in the area of database optimisers. Can anyone suggest a good topic?
Gees, it took me months of reading to decide on an appropriate topic for my Master's thesis and that was with my supervisor's help.

Oh, that must be a troll. That can't possibly be serious. "I'm going for my Phd, can someone recommend a basic book or two?" That's humor. It must be.

I have a gut feeling he is not a troll. He is someone who just asked without thinking or researching about it. Also if he gets a doctorate, he will get the Title of "The Scary DBA"

I'm thinking more like "The Frightening DBA".

He'll have to come by my office to pick up the name plate and I'm not letting go without a fight.
