In my limited experience, the Aussies usually think sheep jokes are funny cuz they're generally told on the Kiwis.
Exactly. The Welsh are in a similar situation to us.

Are we geeks or not?I know I must be one. My thought on seeing the 12000 mark go by was "less than 300 till the 12K mark."
Very clever š

Most sources we use are paid for. There isn't a lot in the public domain. Posting a short excerpt from a book is no different than from a website. You have to give credit, and limit the copying. You also need to comment on it or use it to show a point. Not sure it as the basis for your work, but build on it.
Agreed. If credit is given where credit is due, and the quote is appropriate in length for the topic - then it is fair use.

And I was hoping to get that one in.
Why don't we count in K rather than decimal for this thread?
1024
2048
4096
8192
12288
And the countdown is on.

Thank you wikipedia. Whatever politically correct term we want to use - how about a new term? š

I'm glad you seem to feel the same way. I absolutely refuse to use KiB and the like - we are approaching 12K posts. Simple as that. š

Barry, sourced, quoted, limited to < 1 para, fair use.Steve, while I agree, my question is whether a quote from a paid subscription site (as where this quote is from), would constitute fair use?
That's agreeing? š
In my warped way, yes. I agree that we SHOULD be able to do this... but legal B*** gets in the way too often (especially in this litigious society so prevelant here in the USA), so I was questioning if it is okay to quote something from a place that others have to pay to see.

Thats's what the Fair Use doctrine is all about, Wayne. Paid or not, copyright or not, we are still allowed to quote text from sources, within limits. The U.S. long ago decided that this was a necessary right in order to protect Free Speech in a democratic society.

Here's the line (*):Itzik Ben-Gan, "Calculating Concurrent Sessions, Part 3" (SQL Server Magazine, March 2010)
... In a benchmark test that I ran, it proved to be an order of magnitude faster compared with New Set-Based Solution 1. Iād like to thank Ben Flanaghan, Arnold Fribble, and R. Barry Young for coming up with the new solution. ...(*: Steve, I am pretty sure that this falls under "Fair Use" guidelines. Feel free to edit it out, if not.)
Thanks Barry, and congrats again!
Am I living in a different universe if I confess I don't know Ben Flanaghan nor Arnold Fribble? If you collaborated with them to draw the solution, they must be darn good.
