Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Signal : noise is getting worse in some ways. More people trying to be MVP or show off, so there's more participation.

Just like with anything, as more people participate, the chances of lower knowledge/bad advice increase. Not sure what to do other than just correct what you can, include references, and hopefully increase the signal portion.

    Sorry, I'll cut back. 😉

I hope people don't really think they can do it that way alone. Is this typical behavior this time of year (after MVP nominations open up)?

That was my impression as well. Everyone thinks they're an ex-spurt

    ???

MVP nominations are open all year round, awards given every 3 months.

In that particular case, with the identity column as primary key clustered, yes, doesn't it?

Logical order of the index - yes

Physical order of the data - no

Order that the rows will be returned in - no.

Ok, it's not guaranteed and I would not rely on it, but honestly I have to say I've never seen it behaving differently.

I've been spending some time trying to make it return rows in a different order, but I did not succeed. Does anybody have a script to do that? It would be interesting to see.

It's like the Yeti, just because you've never seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 😛

Found an example of an easy way to break this, check out this thread, bogus (negative) identity values throws this off.

See what I know about it? I thought it was an annual deal and nominations were open only for a short period.

    Thanks for that info.

Is the noise in reference to the "Emergency!!!" / "suspect" thread?

  • The award is annual, but they award 4 times a year. So if you are awarded in April, you are an MVP until next April, when you get renewed or dropped. Nominations occur all the time.

It's not bad that more people are trying to be awarded. I think it could be good for the community with more people speaking or trying to help others. It's that along with all those that are qualified, and there are lots that are and haven't been awarded, there are those that aren't qualified participating as well and adding to the noise level.

    Mostly, but not solely.

It is an annual deal. If I were to nominate someone now, they would be evaluated for potential award in April. If I were to nominate someone at the end of March, they would be evaluated for potential award in July.

I was awarded in July (Steve's in the Jan cycle, Grant in the April. Don't know anyone here in the Oct), so come June my contributions for the previous 12 months go under the spolight and beginning of July I either get reawarded or dropped.

As a part of the evaluation, do you submit your own supporting documentation or does MS go and find it? Just curious how much input the nominee has in the award during the eval/re-eval process.

Actually I already got notice that my stuff was under review. I won't find out if I've done enough to qualify again for six more weeks. Based on that though, I won't ever publish a book or attend a major conference between February & April or it won't hit the review period. Weird stuff.

+1 there. If I am wrong or don't understand something correction is greatly appreciated. Only way I know to improve my knowledge.
