Are the posted questions getting worse?

I was thinking of suggesting this as a possibility for our chapter too. What do you use Jack (for remote presentations)? I imagine a webcam and good speakerphone are probably essential?

What we used for the 24 hours was Live Meeting, webcam and good computer microphone. We used the PC-audio, not phones. Worked quite well.

With 24 hours of pass - I know what the answer would be to the following question. But the next question is geared toward a User Group meeting.

Does it work better for each person to have their own microphone (and speakers), or just broadcast it over one? I can assume each person using their own. For our meetings, we use a borrowed classroom with less than stellar internet connection and the systems are somewhat unreliable. Thus we would need people to bring their own laptops for better results (heavy requirement).

(Tired of too many nested quotes so I'm starting a new post.)

If a presenter was doing a LiveMeeting presentation for one PASS Chapter, is there any reason why multiple chapters could not be viewing the same presentation at the same time? This could be an interesting idea for chapters in the same time zone to try.

There is a PASS virtual chapter that more or less does this. All the meetings are done via LiveMeeting. I know that some of them are held throughout the daytime too.

We used LIve Meeting. If you are an official PASS Chapter you get an account for free. Contact Blythe Morrow at PASS HQ.

Here's how we did it at OPASS http://wiseman-wiseguy.blogspot.com/2010/01/broadcasting-opass-over-live-meeting.html.

We used PC Audio and only had a couple of garbled words in the presentation by Andy Leonard.

    Thanks Jack

  • Once we get virtual meetings figured out for our chapter, I will be inviting the thread denizens to speak at our chapter. I volunteered to help line up some speakers at our chapter. We meet second Thursday of each month. Pacific Time zone.

I attended our last one remotely, and it worked quite well. Audio was over the internet, and it was Live Meeting.

They were only sharing audio and slides, which was fine.

Traded no chance at swag or face to face, but saved 2 or 3 hours of driving.

There were 30 or 40 attending online, plus the live attendees.

Pretty simple, especially if you aren't needing to worrry about looking good for the camera.

We meet second Thursday of each month. Pacific Time zone.

Same as Seattle? That puts you 10 hours behind me. So if you meet at 7pm, it'll be 5am the next day where I am. I might decline the invitation. 😉

Yup - same as Seattle - and timing is worse for your scenario - 6PM here thus 4am for you.

Only time I'm up at 5am is if I haven't yet gone to bed.

Oh, before I forget Jason, we passed on to our local chapter membership the link to your blog about user group participation. That should be required reading for all SQL professionals and enthusiasts!!!

I'm probably still asleep and missed the link... what is it? It sounds quite interesting.

    Link wasn't shared

    Here it is:

    Thanks, Jason... nice write up.

I need a couple of volunteers if any are willing and have some spare time.

I am wrapping up an article and would like somebody else to review it if possible.

    Thanks in Advance.

Seems like you've gotten some very qualified volunteers for this already so I'll just ask for the sake of curiosity... what's the title of the article so I know what to look for when it comes out?

  • Heh... seems to be the week for Twitter... I've gotten a half dozen emails and a couple of in person queries as to why I'm not on Twitter, FaceBook, etc, etc. I am on LinkedIn just to keep from losing track of some old professional buddies and even that seems to have gotten out of hand.

I really know nothing about Twitter or FaceBook except what I can gleen from the invites and the link provided to the person doing the invite. Now, maybe I'm a bit of a hermit with a skeptical attitude but both look more like a public "photograph wall" and a very public chat room neither of which I have much appreciation for. Would someone explain to me the attraction to sites like Twitter and FaceBook and explain what they're actually good for so I can make up my mind as to whether to tell people to stop bugging me about it or take the plunge?

    Thanks folks.

It's a bit like SQL Server CLR integration - it seems to be A Good Idea in principle, but no-one has yet found a killer application for it. 😉
