All right, I've been essentially offline for 3 days and there are close to 100 posts on this thread AND IT has become self-aware!
My question is, was The Thread the millionth member?
Is RBarryYoung The Thread's father? Has it gone over to the Dark Side?

Need an Answer? Actually, No ... You Need a Question

I've just written my very first query containing two full outer joins. Is that bad?

Is that a serious question, or were you trying to provide an example of a bad question?

Yes. 😀
I think this would be a bad choice of thread to post a serious question to.

2. Should a senior DBA be able to answer those questions without having to resort to a forum? In my experience, a "senior" role isn't the one occupied by someone who knows everything there is to know about any one particular product. There are always upgrades, new versions, previously unexplored bugs, newly developed systems and changes in infrastructure to deal with.
I never interview based solely on what someone knows. I prefer to know how they deal with not knowing, but still needing to get something done.
With a senior role, I would expect someone who has the nouse to check books online, MSDN, google, hit relavent forums. That is as distinct from someone who hits a problem and just... stops.
BTW, I'm new to this site, and still learning the ropes. I haven't found it "elitist" yet. 🙂

I've got almost 900 posts in the last 30 days... it'll take me forever to get back to 11/22/2008... would you post the URL for the thread you quoted me on, please? 😉

For the URL of the thread... just look up. Yep, at the top of your browser. Where it says "Address". No, without the double quotes. No, that's your e-mail. You want the browser. No, wrong browser window. The one where you were reading this message. What do you mean you weren't reading the message?

I'd say that depends on if you got the correct results.:w00t:

A million of us?!?!?! There are a million of us??
No wonder the jobs are scarce. Perhaps the answer to the employment problem and the central question of this thread could both be answered if the gurus here began responding to stupid questions with:
"It's obvious you have no talent for this. Go back to front end development where you belong."
or
"Based on the code you've shared, I've detected the possibility that you are incapable of logical thought or following instructions. You should seek medical help or a position in executive management as soon as possible, but for God's sake get out of data related work."
Just a suggestion.

Yup. I added a cross join as well. And the full outer joins are on three common table expressions. Fun!

But that might ruin the fun for some.....
Wish I could reply with something similar when a user wants me to fix a query that they 'enhanced'.
Run into a lot of SELECT DISTINCT, which in our main db means 'what join are they missing'.

Very creative.
I always like giving the user lots of data so they can filter through to get the answer they desire.
That way they are part of the solution. Without their expertise, you could never get the right results.:D

Nope. It's based on Dark Energy, so the more power it has, the darker it gets.

You know, I started a new project last week that keeps me off the forum during the week... Heh, I can't believe that I just spent my night catching up to only 4 days of posts on this thread!
