I'll see if one of my kids can make up a certificate for you. They seem better at that sort of stuff then me. 😉

Isn't that the truth. I have to have my youngest daughter change my ring tone on my phone (I know, pitiful!) as I'll inevitably screw something up and not get calls or something similar.

Been there doing it. My middle daughter actually made my blackberry pretty once, then I had to have it replaced. Still need here to get it back where she had it, but here school work and athletics come first. Not going to agrue with her, she has a 4.67 GPA, and is good at soccer and cross country (even though she hasn't lettered athleticly yet).

Probably not, but you can add it to your resume.

    Excellent idea!

Alright, back to the shadows behind the watercooler for me...

    Chad

    Yea, can see it now:

Assisted SQL Guru wannabe with simple Linked Server setup to MySQL database. 😉

No, actually Chad, I am extremely grateful for the assistance.

Decided to come back to the thread after your bouts in QOD?

  • I haven't been active on SSC much for the last few days, and probably won't be for a few more, because of my new job and getting settled in to that. (It's going very well, by the way.)

But I thought I'd just pop on and mention something the IT manager said to me today.

He mentioned that having data on my resume about being published on a "professional DBA web site" was definitely one of the points that got his attention and got me into the first interview. He wasn't familiar with SSC himself, but he was impressed by the fact that I'd been published.

So, for anyone thinking of writing articles for SSC, keep that in mind.

(I am definitely looking forward to catching up on The Thread after a week or so away from it.)

See you guys around. Keep on keeping on! 🙂

Reminds me of something my co-worker told me a couple of years ago. Her husband was surprised in a public place when his cell phone started saying to him, in their daughter's voice, "Dad. DAD. DAAADDDD. Pick up!". Neither he nor his wife had even realized their phones could have personalized ring tones based on caller ID.

  • Heh... I've found a sure-fire way to keep from having problems with MySQL ODBC drivers... don't use them or MySQL. 😛

    What are writing about, Paul?

I started writing my first article 9 months ago and it isn't finished yet.:crying:

Similar situation for me, only it has been 3 or 4 months.

    Ooops! 18 months.

Well, I can say that I had a baby girl's birth meanwhile, as (partial) justification. My free time has dropped dramatically...

Heh... tell your little girl I said "congrats, you have a good Dad."

Wish I could, unfortunately when people purchase 3rd party products, we don't always get to choose the backend database. We have systems that use Sybase, MySQL, and MS SQL Server. The first two are vendor supported with the only exception being the transfer of data between them and our systems. The major LOB systems all use MS SQL Server. That is where my team comes in.

  • I know what you mean Lynn. Out here, all of the custom development is done w/ SQL Server. But there are a couple of applications that use MySQL and SqlAnywhere. Then there is one application that uses MSDE... and they have it locked down so that we can't even access it to do anything... so there are no backups on this system. 😀 (Well, we weekly shut down the services, then backup the mdf/ldf, and restart the services.)

Act! ::shiver:: I hate the program. Having had to deal with data exports from that program, I am a firm believer that the people who make the product don't use it. I would not recommend that program to anyone. Use an Excel spreadsheet before using Act! Heck, use post-it notes and pencils instead of Act! You'll have better and more accurate access to your data.
