Just curious -Can people ONLY post 'intelligent' question on this web site?
To me, there is no good or bad question, if you don't know the answer, it is better to ask the question than assume you know the answer just liked many people I work with or use to work with.
Maybe I am the one who ask 'stupid' question all the time.
I don't think the rant is so much about the questions not being "intelligent" it is more about people not being willing to look something up for themselves. Asking a question like "how do I backup a sql server database?" should be unnecessary because BOL or a googling it will provide a usable answer faster than asking here.
Most of us on this thread are more than willing to answer even the simple questions that should be looked up in BOL, but what we'd like to see is a complete question (see Jeff's article in my signature line and the one below that) that also includes what you have already tried.
The other issue is posts like the first one Jeff linked to where the person claims to be a Senior DBA (although maybe not in SQL Server), but does not know how to even begin troubleshooting a slow query.
Also posts like this, http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic607022-5-1.aspx where there is not a question asked and the OP never responds. I want to help the OP, but can't because I have no clue what is being asked.

Then there are posts like this one http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic607983-1291-1.aspx and you spend hours of your own time coming up with a solution to replace thier RBAR code; you ask for sample data, source tables (I even made it easier by asking for the data from the source query instead of the underlying tables), and expected results and instead you get posted csv data and nothing else.
I mean, come on, we are busting our arses how about some help helping you in return!
The OP apologized, sure, but I just wasn't feeling it, you know what I mean?

...try to think of anything you can add that may be important to answering your questions.
Maybe could've changed anything to something!!! Anything at all will do!

My first draft was far less politically correct.

Can someone give me a hand with this one? The earliest I'm going to have a change to sit down and work out some code is tomorrow afternoon when I finally get home.

If I have the time, I'll try. I have few issues right now here at work that I have to figure out.

Wow, that's a lot of code. Posted a hint to a derived table article.

That one was a hoot. The original problem definition was what, four lines. It grew to almost four pages of code by the time the guy was done adding things.

Ok, what's up with this?

Even ignoring the fact that he is trying to do something in Excel and is posting to a SQL 2005 forum, this is still a pretty awful post.

Yeah it does seem like there are a many questions that are unrelated to SQL and/or are incomplete, but it also seems I am getting more feedback lately on the answers I provide as well.

You mean like "You're right and I'm wrong" as I just recently posted?

Heh... check out ths clown...
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic607292-1424-2.aspx#608466
He posted a NUMS function that uses a WHILE loop, has spent most of the post justifying his crud code, and then calls folks "anal" about performance methods. Later on, he claims to be in the business of "performance tuning".
I'm putting the bones back in some of the pork chops for this one. 😛
