We went to Android, isn't everyone?
Patience, my padawans. I'm looking to write things up, but honestly I'm not 100% sure what the final was since I only had an opinion and not a decision.
We did move to VMs, we are clustered, and engaged some sort of SAN. The old architecture was:
- 1 web server w/ IIS - also sent mail from a console app and had a backup server that was essentially a mirror
- 1 db server, DASD, 3 drive R5, a couple volumes, but data/log/tempdb all together. Main databases here, forum db log shipped back.
- 1 db server, DASD, I think 1 R5 array, 1 R1 array, hosting forum dbs. Other dbs log shipped here.
These were essentially 2007 technology that Rack Space provided, 4 dedicated machines.

We will. I'm not sure if they changed something else as they knocked off early today in the UK (Xmas party). Sending was definitely slower, so things might have been throttled back to limit loads.

I don't know if I like this idea. There's already too many places for people to go ask questions.Yes & no. How many SQL Server questions fit into 140 characters? I just don't like that they suggested a different site than us for detailed questions (and at 140 characters, they're all detailed).
Well, it was Brent's idea (at least I think it was) and he's involved with Stack Overflow. Hence it would be the site that he recommends. He does the same on his blog.

Witching hour being the middle of my morning. I find that the worst times are around 9am-10am my time.

I figured I would add my $0.02 since it is my blog post discussed above. Brent Ozar and Aaron Nelson discussed this on twitter the other day and I, obviously by my post, liked the answer. So their idea is to use the #sqlhelp hashtag for SQLQuestions on twitter. I have to say, it does work in certain situations. Perhaps with an urgent issue, perhaps with a link back to a post on a forum like SSC or one of the other sites like the forums, stack overflow, etc. I have seen it work with folks getting help with odd issues, critical issues or general questions. I myself have received help on twitter and I believe Jonathan Kehayias also blogged about some help he got via twitter.
I don't think that twitter should (or even could) replace the insight given in a forum like this. Here you can deeper with the how and why and get multiple opinions all in thread style.
My add-on thought to the idea that Aaron and Brent came up with is to tweet questions from RSS feeds from forums like this and sites like StackOverflow/ServerFault/MSDN Forums/etc. Ideally there would be one place to go for help and we would all be there receiving and offering help. That's not the lay of the land and I think getting new questions into one feed that folks can subscribe to (if they want) and click on a link to a question that they have experience in is a service to the person asking the question.
I do agree with Steve's point that the chatter level can increase but that is why the twitter clients utilize groups/etc.

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
Don't want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy

I have hitherto refrained from posting this out of considerations of public decency, but....
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

That would be an insanely busy feed. Add to that the necessity to shrink urls (and maybe even topics) for the twitter character limit and you've got a twitter 'list' that's hundreds (or more) tweets per day with probably little context. It'll make it very difficult to pick out the questions that I can answer from the ones that I can't. Signal-noise or something like that.
I see what you're trying to achieve, but an unfiltered feed is likely to be too busy to really be useful. Now, if it was broken down by source forum and general area then it could be useful to keep an eye on certain topics.
