... and besides that, I don't need no new SQL query tool!!!
If the ones I have don't do what I need then I'll write my own!
Now where's that coffee?!?!?!?!

She's being nice about it. That means Steve can be nice about removing the post, or whatever he decides to do about it, even if that's nothing.
It's not that I mind an ad for a query tool. I wouldn't mind someone going into the general forums and asking "What features matter most to you in a query tool?" I do think RedGate should have a right to regulate blatant advertising on their site, especially for a product that essentially competes with one of theirs.
If I owned a coffee shop, I wouldn't want some Starbucks employee sticking ads for their company up in my windows. It's rude. Same thing here.

If we can ask for anything that new query tool should be able to handle, why not request two functions that would really help:
1) refuse (or at least request special privileges) to perform any kind of RBAR if there is a set based solution (meaning: almost every time 😉 ) and
2) refuse (or at least request special privileges) to perform queries that are not supported by proper table indexing.
Both with proper error messages, of course...

I struggle with this a little. I want to allow people in the community to interact, which includes vendors. At the same time, Red Gate does regulate and want to limit advertising here. They own the site, I understand this.
We didn't allow advertising like this in the past because it was a way in which people tried to avoid paying us. Now they would like to pay us, but Red Gate doesn't really accept that. I'm open to suggestions about what makes sense here, or what might be low impact to users.
I have run some surveys for Microsoft to allow them to get community opinions.

Make that the subject of a Friday survey.

That's not bad. I'll see if I can structure something that won't upset everyone around me.

I promise I won't be upset. So, now you can upset all the rest of 6.7-billion people, and it won't be "everyone". (Or am I too stuck in set-based-logic and boolean tests?)

More seriously, if you word the survey well, it should be fine.
I need the opinion of community members on an aspect of the forums. Over the years, vendors of database-related software have wanted feedback on their products from the SQL DBA and/or SQL Developer field, and SQLServerCentral is certainly a good place to find a lot of that field.
In some cases, they have posted in the forums about their products. Some of the posts are requests for feedback or testing. Some are more like ads or marketing.
RedGate, which owns the site, has very specific rules about actual advertising on the site, in terms of banners and related ads. But they don't have specific rules about posting this kind of thing in the forums.
Since this mainly has an effect on the people who use the forums, and not a direct effect on the operation of the site, I thought it best to go to the people affected and ask for opinions.
Some people may find this kind of posting too similar to e-mail spam, and dislike it. Others may appreciate the chance to hear about software that might be useful to them.
I'd like to know what you think on the subject. Should there be rules on this kind of thing? Should there be a forum dedicated to it, or just allow it in the appropriate existing forums? Should posts of that sort be deleted and accounts banned for doing it? Should it be judged on a post-by-post basis, and on what general criteria?
Something like that, perhaps with links to a few of the posts (at least the one that prompted this discussion). (Of course, if you just copy-and-paste what I just wrote, it'll probably do what you want, but nobody will believe you wrote it. We don't really have similar writing styles. I'm much stuffier on this kind of thing. But go ahead if you want to. No copyright on this post.)
I don't think something like that will upset anyone. If it does, you'd upset them no matter what you wrote.
