Actually, pretty desperate, the deadlock chapter comes up in two weeks! You may see me attempting to answer a few of the deadlock posts as they come up.
If you need a hand, drop me a mail. I was dreaming in deadlock graphs a couple weeks back.

Oooh... Unforced error on the play. I will take you up on that. You've been warned.

Ok, you all have way too much time on your hands.

Ok, here we go again.
This is one of the best ones I have seen in awhile.

Jeff, I don't know if there is a way you could have responded with more distain, but it did make me laugh.

It was very difficult to maintain any semblance of professionalism on that one. Some of these folks need to clean the pipe they're smoking. 😛

Wow, that one is the best yet.

Need an Answer? Actually, No ... You Need a Question

Or the worst, depending on how you look at it.
Is it me, or is it just the "language barrier"? Have these people no clue as to what a little etiquette is or do they just not have command enough of the English language to be able to sound otherwise?

There are plenty of broken-english or "google translated" postings that have no hint of this type of entitlement.
It's the individual, not the language barrier.

Someone should keep a list, starting 1/1/09, of the bad questions that come in. At the end of the year, they can publish something similar to the Darwin Awards, consisting of the top 20 or so worst ones.

Agreed, the questions are definitely getting worse, and that most recent one that Jeff responded to is right up there on the scale of BAD.
So, the question is what to do.?.? Typically when I see these I TRY to point them in a direction and then leave them alone to ask more questions. I do find that a lot of posters will answer their questions directly which ultimately is bad. Having trained a couple of DBA's in the past I found this to be the only way to think for themselves.
When I get the sense that someone has taken over DBA work for someone else under false pretenses (i.e. claiming to be something that they are not; and you can usually tell as they are supporting an environment that they could not have created with the skills that they evidence based on the question they are asking) then I will usually not answer them clearly but will force them to research. I don't believe that handholding is providing any benefit in that situation.
Being that I am weighing in on this later this may already be covered and I missed it so if this response is similar to another I apologize.

So now let's discuss those people that post without reading the entire thread...

Don't worry, this has turned into a "vent about annoying people" thread and you do not appear to be one of them.

Please feel free to nicely tell people you are not doing their work for them. Or ask them to post more information. Or skip over them.
This has become quite a rant, though I understand. A lot of the sentiments expressed are how I feel quite often.

Just curious -
Can people ONLY post 'intelligent' question on this web site?
To me, there is no good or bad question, if you don't know the answer, it is better to ask the question than assume you know the answer just liked many people I work with or use to work with.
Maybe I am the one who ask 'stupid' question all the time.
November 24, 2008 at 8:18 am
It's not that the questions are bad in that they shouldn't be asked. It's that the posters don't take a few minutes to properly frame a question or do any research. Or that they've posted some test question hoping for a quick answer.
Questions of ignorance, not knowing something, are fine. It's the lack of effort or manners that annoy regular posters.
