Just an FYI, since THE THREAD is so heavily visited. We've started our own ASK site at http://ask.sqlservercentral.com. Not my idea, and I'm not sure how we'll sync up points/rating at some point, but feel free to check it out, post/answer questions there.
My problem is that I cannot login to ask.sqlservercentral.com since it uses OpenID. From our company network, no external email is allowed. So when I am trying login with Yahoo, the firewall just kills my session.. 🙁
Isnt there any other work around?

The Thread makes sense????

I thought there was a way to create a specific ask.sqlservercentral.com account without using OpenID.

I think you can be anonymous, or create a local account.

Of course! I was surprised to see the Broncos win, but it was a great two-fer. Boston and the Pats lose 😀
I guess it was good the Broncos and Cowboys (my favorite teams) won as well. I had a bet that Broncos would not win 6 games with a friend. I'm going to concede now as they have vastly outdone what I thought they would do.

I had a hot discussion with Joe Celko some days ago about the quirky update. He doesn't seem to like it.
I told him I use the quirky update expecting it to break at some point with service packs or new sql versions, but I use it in the meanwhile because it's fast and I would care about the problems when they arise.
He said that he would never step on a bridge built by an engineer that works this way....
Good point, actually.
The vast majority of bridges in this world are "built" by laying down a plank or two of wood from one side to the other (of whatever is being bridged). No engineering standards applied, nor any applicable.
Such bridges will break/wash away/rot given much time. They will then again cost just about $0 to replace, just like they did the first time.
If Joe would actually refuse to cross such a bridge, which is what he's claiming, then he's a complete fool. (He's not a fool. He's just fixed on certain ideas, and willing to back them up with silly hyperbole based on nothing but the usual emotional manipulation of such statements.)
I see your point of view, Gus.
My respect for Joe Celko is still too big to think he could say something based on nothing. Everyone does his own job, so developers write (hopefully) working code and standards keepers protect the standards.
Fortunately we can see things from different points of view and that's why two heads will always be better than just one.:-)

Joe certainly knows more about SQL than I do. No question about that. But there's a big difference between knowledge and wisdom. He, in my opinion, confuses the two.
I could be mistaken, but he seems to believe that there's only one right way to do things. That's a significant part of what I've taken away from what little I've read of his works. Maybe if I read more, I'd see something else, but that's what I see at this point. That's really my only disagreement with him.

Heh, Broncos are good, there is no reason why they wouldn't get more wins.
I was specially happy about Detroit Lions win two weeks ago, they finally won a game in a regular season 🙂

I watched the game and for a bit they looked like the Cardiac Kids, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I mean really, give the Pats 2 first downs off penalties on fourth down in the same drive. I am elated to have watched them win in OT, that was awesome.
On anthor note, we are on the road heading to Fort Jackson, SC. We left around 8:30 MDT and reached Kansas City, KS at around 8:00 CDT. We are speanding the night at a Comfort Inn and will be heading out again in the morning.

Heh. I've been playing this one close to the vest until I had something that I could publish. But I did partly give it away by using a simplified version of it here for Garadin's tests (no I don't mean all of the varchar tricks, it's the other thing in there that I didn't mention :-)). I was surprised that no one noticed that my example worked, even without a matching clustered index.
Barry, I was trying to do something similar here as a joke, but I think your technique is not a joke at all!! It's an amazing idea and I'll keep it in mind.
I hope you don't mind I tried to give it a name if you haven't yet. Could "Quirky XML Select" fit?
It's a great idea and I'm really interested in it. If you need some help for testing it deeply you can count on me.

Somewhat off-topic (to the topic that is currently off-topic, that is):
IIRC someone who frequents the Thread writes fiction - have I imagined this? Any pointers as to who it might be? I've started writing fiction myself (short stories/flash fiction can be found in the link in my sig), would be useful to "meet" others who have been bitten by the same bug!
