Ow, my head.... where the @#$%# is that spare keyboard!!!
Right there with you. Check out this one.
Oh. My. That's in the 'ten-foot barge pole' category.
There's something that bothers me about that. Should someone who appears to not know how to copy a file be responsible for a production database?
Why limit that question? I'd ask, "Should someone who appears to not know how to copy a file be in any sort of IT capacity for anyone at all?"
Actually, they shouldn't be allowed near a computer in any capacity. I think McDonalds is hiring burger flippers. 😛
I used to work with a salesman who had never used a computer before he took on that job. He would have his assistant print out his e-mails, he'd write the replies on the printouts, and she'd type them in and send them for him.
He would, however, have to visit various web pages himself. He did eventually gain some level of competence for that. Nothing beyond that, but he could surf, which he did need for the job.
He was worth about half a million a month to the company. They could have afforded a full-time IT person just to help him out, and still had a hefty profit margin left over on his sales volume.
So, it's not "keep him away from the computer". It's "don't let him into meetings where IT is being discussed".

I just registered for the 24 Hours of SQL Server. That's going to be a long 2 day period. Looks like it should be an informative 24 hour period.Did you register for the whole lot? All 24 hour sessions?
I just registered for 12 sessions for now. I may add a few more later.
Gail, I've got your session @5 AM, Grant's @ 7 AM, Steve's @ 11 AM.

5AM? That's dedication.
Just a note, my indexing session's mostly a level 200, so don't expect deep technical dives.
I've got 7 that I want to attend (8 if you include the one I'm presenting) starting 11am my time and stretching through til midnight.

My session is going to be VERY basic. Be warned. If you're worried about falling asleep...

Grant, It's not your session I'm worried about. Steve's the one that might have the biggest challenge to keep me awake.
I signed up for sessions without paying attention to the time. My worst stretch starts with Gail @5 AM, and ends with Steve from 11AM - 1Noon.
I'm in between contracts right now so I can afford to be up for long hours. I may have to skip some of these if something comes up.

hey, maybe I can follow that one then. I've had a copy of your Dissecting SQL Server Execution Plans on my desk for some time now, and have learned one thing from it:

Any one else agree with my sentiment here?
That depends... does the sentiment include pillory or bastinado?

Ouch, that's not good. That means I did a lousy job.
One thing, and it's a biggie. Through out that book I refer to the costs of various execution plans as if you can compare one to another. I thought you could when I wrote it. I've learned better since then, so be aware, whenever this gets re-written, that'll get removed.

It's nothing personal Steve, just the time slot you're in.

FYI, am in the hospital again, back problems (can't walk or even sit up), was admitted through the ER yesterday. as before, if you guys could cover for me here, I would be eternally grateful.Sorry to hear you're not well, Barry.
I'm having problems with my back too (not that bad, fortunately). Damn Air Conditioning!!
All my best wishes, get well soon!
Oh, Rats! I completely forgot about your article review, Gianluca. I will still try to review it, but I would strongly engourage you to get someone else too so that you do not have to rely on me (I am definitely at minimal capacity here). Sorry, ... 🙁
Don't worry, Barry! Just forget about it! All your energy must be put towards getting better now!
I already got some precious advice from Jeff and also Gus said he would have a look, so don't worry: looks like I'm in good hands.
You can read it to fall asleep if the morphine doesn't work...:-)
Get well soon!
