  • License plates again. Saw a gorgeous blonde driving around in some two seater black cabriolet a couple of months ago. Wouldn't touch her with a ten foot pole though. License plate was PMS247-WP :w00t:

That's a bad registration number to be assigned....

For the non-South Africans, that's the standard format of our Registration plates, three characters, 3 numbers and then the two letter province code.

  • Well, it is now official. We are down one daughter in our household.

Kassondra is now on her way to Fort Jackson in South Carolina to start her military career in the US ARMY.

I am proud of the commitment she has made and wish her well, and though I won't miss that know it all attitude of her's the house is still very quite right now.

  • Hi Lynn,

I wish Kassondra all the best and I hope she'll be always stationed in safe areas!

Thank you all. We are planning on 45 minutes of presentation at the max. Not more than that. That will keep the group interested. Longer than that I think they will start feeling bored. Also the first half hour is kind of like an Introduction by everyone. 🙂

Steve, is it Ok if I put the URL here? I would like to get the feed back from everyone. We are just setting up the site. So the more ideas the better. 🙂

    Hey Roy, congrats as well!

I agree with the 45 minutes you set as a limit. We've got a bi-weekly company-internal tech-brief one hour long meeting running between Johannesburg and Cape Town on various topics by video conference, and I've caught myself napping on a few occasions. In fact, one day when I was on my own on the Cape Town side I was awakened by a rude wake-up shout from the other side. Not funny to be caught snoring away on video 🙂

I've held one presentation in early 2005 on new features in SQL 2K5 for that forum. Believe me, it's a lot of work to prepare, and that has scared me away from doing more of them. What it taught me though is that such a wide topic is too much to fit into a 1 hour session. I ended up talking for 1 1/2 hours, skipping over a lot of stuff I'd love to have talked about, and that without fielding any questions. Next time I'll have to time this a bit better upfront and split it into multiple sessions. So my advice is to be nice to your potential speakers from the members. Offer them small topics to talk about. It will keep the rest of the audience happy, and the presenter thinking "hey, I can do more of these"

Sorry to have to correct you here, Gail, that standard applies to all provinces except KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape. We still have the olden standard of having the district code in front of the up to six digit number (mine is CA76169 for Cape Town) and Durban would be ND123456 for instance. Anything that ends in NZ (for KwaZulu-Natal) or WP (Western Cape Province, God thanks someone in the Department of Transport had a bright spark and decided not to make it WC) is a personalised licence plate, so this lady deliberately chose it :w00t: Or maybe her husband owns the car...

  • Serious? Thought all of those had been changed 15 or so years ago. I know that up here, a registration plate in the old format, regardless of what province it's from, is considered out of date and is asking for you to get pulled over by Metro.

Is your local government still debating the change? (I know it takes forever to get anything done in the Cape, bit this is pushing things a little.... ;-))

Man, I'm clearly not doing things correctly. I've had to present twice a year for the last three years. I have the hardest time getting anyone, from the group or outside it, to present.

Speaking of that... when is your September meeting, Grant?

Here's to those that serve! If she were going into the Navy, I'd say something corny like "I wish her fair winds and trailing seas!" Well done to Kassondra and her parents! May she be safe and diligent.

  • Talking about military. I'm sure a lot of people know this (twitter, blog), but for those who don't...

Jonathan Kehayias, who posts here from time to time, serves in the US Army Reserves. Couple weeks ago he got a minimal warning notice of activation, and he's been posted to Afghanistan for the next 12 months. From what I can tell, he hasn't left yet, but says he'll be going over no later than Aug 3rd.

All the best to her Lynn.

We're getting the tiniest taste of that. The Boy is off at Scout camp all week without me. First time for both of us. It's a little weird.

I have to see if I can setup travel first. I'll let you know before the end of the week.

So far as topic or topics go, is there something that you'd really like to see?
