Now that the Star Trek Universe has been altered, they have opened the door to new series and movies. I wonder how these things will pan out in the future.

Saw Startrek. Loved it. Good story, emotional scenes (Spock's mother), tension, explosions, etc. What really clinched it for me was all the little bits, sayings, mannerisms that linked back to the original movies and series ("I have been and always shall be your friend")
Going to see Transformers on Thursday. Haven't seen Harry Potter and don't intend to. The book's still on my reading list (got half way through and put it down because Harry's behaviour was irritating me). When/if I manage to finish the book I'll watch the movie.
Waiting for Angels and Demons on DVD. Will rent from video store. I've read the book, not exciting enough to see at cinema.

I think my favorite scene from the Star Trek movie was the meeting between the new Spock and the old Spock. And yes, an interesting rebirth of the franchise. I am interested in seeing what they do with it, either another movie or a TV series. That one I might actually make an effort to watch (I don't watch TV at all, my TV is used as a screen for the DVD player. With the switch to a digital signal in the US, I'm not even sure I -can- watch TV anymore. So I would have to catch it on the net.)
I'm semi-interested in Angels and Demons because I'm curious about various Catholic Church conspiracy/occult/whatever theories. They make for good stories. Secret societies, buried occult mysteries, the powers of light and dark battling in the background... perfect stuff for a good story.

Suggestion Kit - DVR. Best invention since sliced bread. Maybe before.
Why? Because TV suddenly works just like your DVD player. FF through commercials, pause live TV, record TV series and only get new episodes/watch them whenever you want to.
Awesome. Can't stand live TV anymore, I'll literally pause the damn thing and go do something for 15 minutes so I have the buffer to ff through the commercials again.

I agree on the DVR. I rarely watch anything live, including sports. I'll start recording, watch a little, can pause and go off with life. Come back later.
I enjoyed Star Trek, and while I don't care about the inconsistencies with the original, it was annoying to see some things like the transport-to-a-moving-ship thing. Kind of destroys the limitations that build excitement/suspense.
Thought "Up" was slightly depressing, sad movie in many ways.
Haven't seen much else, but GI Joe is on the list.
I'll recommend Leverage on TNT if you get the chance. Wil Weaton recommended it, and I think he's in a few episodes this season, but I think it's great.

Thanks, Lynn, and hi everybody. Forgive the odd name. It's a personal quirk that when I'm feeling somewhat uncertain and tentative, I derive to a point. I'm about 1000 posts behind on The Thread, so I'm not up on current events, but I will generically say:
1. Congratulations to whomever needs congratulating, for whatever reasons congratulations are appropriate.
2. [Insert name of problem child of the day] is an idiot and a troll. Just disengage and let them sink, rather than let them ruin your day.
3. I've missed you guys and hope you are all doing well.
Since the current topic appears to be movies:
I've seen Star Trek (3 times) and thought the casting was brilliant. I also applaud the re-opening of the universe with the classic characters. Clearly, the writers understood that the "menace" was not as central to the storyline as the interplay between the characters.
I thought Public Enemies was a good movie but not a great one.
Harry Potter is on the list for the coming week.

So, the suggestion is buy a DVR to achieve functionality that can be accomplished by getting the DVDs from Netflix?
I don't watch TV. I don't see any reason to do so. I'd rather spend my time on dozens of other things.
I don't have to buy anything to fast forward through the commercials in a good book. I don't have to change channels and hope that something better is on if the scriptwriters were brain dead for an episode, if I'm playing an online game. I don't have to record it for later if I'm playing fetch with my dogs. I don't have to pause if I'm spending time with my wife. That seems to cover pretty much all of the features of DVR, right?
If there are shows that you like, by all means, use a DVR to watch them. I've had a few over the last decade that I thought were worth the time, like Firefly, Heroes, and the costumes in the first season of Alias (the show sucked, but the outfits they made her wear were worth a glance or two). So, for those, I get the DVDs from Netflix, and return them when I'm done, or when I get bored and decide I don't actually want to see them. Made the mistake of buying season 1 and 2 of Battlestar Galactica. Should have rented those. That was before my Netflix addiction kicked in solidly.
