    for Pittsburgh SQL Saturday

    Are you guys eating on site or picking a place to eat at the Waterfront?

    I'm presenting so I could easily go either way for lunch but my preference will be to be on site so that anyone that wants to talk or just ask a question can easily do so.   I really enjoy the networking with folks.

    Looking forward to Pitt. Buying tickets and making reservations this week.

    See you in a month

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!  Ed Wagner and I both have confirmed hotel reservations.  We'll be at the same place were were at last year.  The nearby places this year are way to expensive.  Huge savings just by being 16 miles away.

    Not Burgatory! Ed and Jeff will murder me!

    The last time Ed, Jeff, and Eirikur came to Pittsburgh they wanted a good burger. Red Robin was their choice.  I said nah, there are way better places. Burgatory was my choice. It was packed, we waited forever, and I think the service was bad.

    They still give me grief about it.

    Hope I get to see some others soon.

  • So anyone got suggestions on things to do in Seattle in two weeks, after the Summit is done for the day, for someone who won't have a rental car?

    Go back to your hotel & recover from being around people so much?

    No?

    OK, then, the nighttime Seattle Underground tour was fantastic. I'd make reservations.

    Just don't forget about all the various evening events (many that involve zero alcohol), Photo Walk, Game Night, and others. Bunch of stuff listed here: Community and sponsor events - PASS Data Community Summit. Watch the fish fly at the Pike Place Fish Market. Check out the bubble gum wall (nearby the fish market), just don't take any. Not sure what else there is in the evenings. I'm always jam packed with all the official events such that if I actually have any time to myself, I hide.

    Yes, very much yes!

    Although the game night, I'll probably join in, might even toss one or two of the "fast casual" games I've got in my luggage to bring along

    Seeing as work is paying for my trip, I'm probably going to try to squeeze a LOT of "official" conference stuff into it, and not so much any "fun" stuff.  My flight in is on Tuesday and I'm leaving Saturday morning, which kind of cuts out any "touristing" before or after the Summit.

    Ha! I feel you. Believe me.

    If you have time Friday night, I'd still recommend the Underground tour. I really enjoyed it.

  • Tried to reply over on your blog, too, but our network blocked the authentication piece, so...

    I'll be one of the kilt-wearers on Thursday, just hope no one minds a utili-kilt!  🙂

    Or maybe a Tactical Kilt...

    It was great to see you in-person after all these years, ol' friend.  Thanks for making the trip.

  • Underground tour is fantastic. There are likely some other night stuff, but I'm not much for that. There are cool museums if you have a free few hours. The museum of flight is cool, but not sure how early they close. Bainbridge Island is a neat place, but not sure how much stuff is open later, but it's a nice peaceful place and small town a short tide from SEA.

    I'd suggest you meet people and try to make plans with others each night, get some networking + fun.

  • I cannot sufficiently nor politely express the growing level of disgust I've developed about Microsoft and SQL Server, especially since 2012 sp3.

    I'd written some simple code to determine a difference between the millisecond DATEPART of two dates with times and it was missing the very specific test examples I created.  Then I found out why (major facepalm, head-desk 3X).

    THE FOLLOWING CODE CHANGES THE COMPATABILITY LEVEL OF THE CURRENT DATABASE AND WILL NEED TO BE MANUALLY CHANGED BACK BECAUSE THE GO's ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE IT WORK.

    Here is the simplest form to explain the reason why the test failed.  To summarize, the code works as expected in 2014 or less and fails since they made the "breaking change" supposed accuracy "improvements" to the DATETIME datatype in 2016 and up.

     SELECT CurrentCompatibilityLevel = compatibility_level
    FROM sys.databases
    WHERE name = DB_NAME();
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ALTER DATABASE CURRENT SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 120 --2014
    GO
    SELECT SqlServer2014_DT = DATEPART(ms,CONVERT(DATETIME ,'2022-07-03 13:41:52.007'))
    ,SqlServer2014_DT2 = DATEPART(ms,CONVERT(DATETIME2,'2022-07-03 13:41:52.0071265'));
    GO
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ALTER DATABASE CURRENT SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 130 --2016
    GO
    SELECT SqlServer2016_DT = DATEPART(ms,CONVERT(DATETIME ,'2022-07-03 13:41:52.007'))
    ,SqlServer2016_DT2 = DATEPART(ms,CONVERT(DATETIME2,'2022-07-03 13:41:52.0071265'));
    GO

    Here are the results.  See the problem?  "Well done" Microsoft. 🙁
