Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Awww, SQLBits has been postponed until September.  I was really looking forward to it as well, but not surprised at all.

Your real problem there is RyanAir, not COVID-19. 😉

lol - I use them about 5 or 6 times a year and there are crying babies, no first class, no legroom, service attendants that smash the trolley into your arm, 5$ for a small pack of pringles

an old colleague of mine told me that they shaved 30% of the weight of the safety notices (which we don't read) just to cut fuel costs as the weight saving was a few KG

gotta say, as much as this is not in the spirit of customer luxury.. it is in the spirit of DBA... make it as light as possible and keep your query costs down

Last I read the EU has reached out to the Airports about this. The reason they're flying the planes is because of the "use it or lose it" attitude in regards to favourable departure times. If the Flight Company doesn't use the slot, they lose the slot, so to avoid losing it they send the plane out regardless if many (or anyone) are on the plane. Really stupid if you ask me; at least with things that are going on.

Next flight I have (booked) isn't till September though, so hoping things will be calmer by then. If not, and the Home Office advise against flying to Japan at least I get a refund so I'm not worrying about it; not like anything I can do will change things.

I'm going to be cancelling and rearranging flights & hotels all over the place. Phew, what a pain in the bottom this is all going to be.

a terrible system at best - hopefully they can use those slots to put trainee crew through a couple of drills

  • SQLBits.

Not a huge surprise. I've seen a few events coming up being cancelled or postponed.

Good they have postponed it though and not cancelled it.

Sadly hotel is standing by its non refundable policy at the moment.

Fortunately I live close enough to London that I'd decided to just train it in for the two days I was planning on attending.  The new dates are my wife's birthday weekend, so that's going to be a fun discussion

  • I have been the victim of some cancellations. My band was going to be playing at SXSW again this year. That was cancelled. That in itself isn't a huge issue but trying to deal with the AirBNB to get a refund is a nightmare. They already have crazy high surge pricing during that time. The house that we rented is normally about $150/night, but during that two week span it is $500/night. We had 8 people staying there so we needed a decent sized place. At first they offered to refund the clean up fee. How generous since we weren't even going to be there. I understand it is a business to rent out a house but the local government cancelled the event which was the reason for us to be there and declared it a local disaster. Would they not refund rental money if there was  tornado or hurricane? Such a huge pain.

Epidemic disease or illness that suddenly affects a region or an entire group of people. This doesn’t include existing diseases that are associated with an area—for example, malaria in Thailand or dengue fever in Hawaii. Any updates to our policy regarding the outbreak of a disease, and the scope of policy application, will be determined based on announcements by the World Health Organization and local authorities.

Travel restrictions imposed by a government, law enforcement agency, or military that restrict travel to or from the listing or experience location.

Oh yeah I have seen this and been referring the host to this document. We have stopped dealing with the host as he is being unreasonable about the whole situation and gone directly to AirBNB. They agreed that we have a pretty solid argument for a full refund. It will be up for review in the coming days. Sure hope I don't have to pay rental fees for a property that was not visited due to the local government declaring a local disaster due to a pandemic.

  • Only two flights for me, easily cancelled for credit. Two hotels cancelled, but one was prepaid and they don't seem to want to do anything. I was hoping to push the date out, but so far no good.

A pain, but not a huge loss, and I get the other side. If I had rented my house and you cancelled late after paying, I'd be reluctant to refund since I'm not going to get that booked. The fair thing in this time is to refund because I would want you to come back in the future.

I think this is going to be a huge blow to the world economy, but at least we'll all be in this together. I do hope those that take advantage of this get punished economically later. This is truly a time to pull together, not try to maximize our own profit.

  • pulling together?

Our bosses (here) are pushing us together - but with no official policy (in a good way)

I asked my boss (i'm quoting verbatim)  "what do you want me to do, i'm not asking to work from home, but I have a sore throat and a cough , if you would prefer I did then it's cool"

he replied - "see how you feel tomorrow - it's not an issue, take your laptop home and see what happens"

we are looking after each other because its a cool company

  • Same here. We aren't closing the offices, but anyone is free to work from home.
