    Because that information, so far as I know, is correct. Transaction log backups back up the log file. That's why people get things so screwed up on their systems when they're only doing full backups and don't know why the transaction log keeps growing to insane sizes.

  • The question was "What types of backup are there?" followed by a lot of muttering, hesitation and apologies for going blank. I've gone completely blank in interviews before, so it is undertandable. The remark about the full backups was made as a kind of throw-away comment at the end.

    "A full database backup backs up the whole database. This includes part of the transaction log so that the full database can be recovered after a full database backup is restored."

    Pedantic, I know but I have more of a problem with people saying something wrong than just saying they don't know - especially at that level of DBA.

    That isn't being pedantic, that is what should be expected. There is nothing wrong with not knowing how to do something, but just making it up is not a good way to proceed. Sure in the real world this is sometimes what we have to do but hopefully asking peers or seeking advice first, not just go do it and find out what happens.

  • Had a very pleasant surprise on Saturday!!!

    I spoke in Providence on Saturday.  Among my audience were these two gentlemen, one of whom was Jeff Moden.  (Hi, Jeff!  Good to see you again!)

    (Yeah, I use the word "gentlemen" loosely.  I know, I know! 😉 )

    The other, sitting next to him, was someone I didn't recognize.  He introduced himself to me after I finished my presentation.  When I saw his name tag, I realized who he was!

    After years and years of conversing with him here on the SSC forums (not to mention playing fantasy football against him), I finally got to meet Lynn Pettis in person!

    Good to finally meet you, Lynn!  Nice to put a face to a name!

    I did a full brisket for the first time on Friday just gone.  I'd never been happy with the results using the UK cut so I decided to treat myself while I had the opportunity and ordered one online.  Ironically, it was from a reasonably local supplier but they don't sell direct which was a little annoying.  There's still work to do but it was much more tender than anything I'd achieved before.  I'll be much happier doing one for the whole clan now, particularly after I'd seen how much meat there was for Mrs B and me alone!

    A transaction log backup also works as expected in the Bulk Logged Recovery Model if a FULL backup has been taken in the past, the same as if you're in the Full Recovery Model.

    Nice!!! Brisket can be tricky to get it right. But once you dial it in they are quite delicious. And yeah it is a big piece of meat.

  • One of our groups is using MongoDB and we got a notice that we're evaluating making it more widely available.  In the announcement was a link to a course we could take to help in the evaluation.  The course uses an externally hosted database, but a coworker and I have both experienced problems connecting to that database.  I'm thinking it's probably a firewall setting, so I was in a chat with our help desk.  As part of the troubleshooting, the website suggested running a tracert.  The helpdesk person had apparently never seen a tracert before.
