Sean Lange - Tuesday, November 27, 2018 8:11 AMNeil Burton - Tuesday, November 27, 2018 7:47 AMI've just had a conversation with our client about the fact that backups weren't being taken on the instance that we provide to them. It's not strictly our problem, that's why we gave them their own instance, but it's making our alerting screens look bad. To defend the chap I spoke to, he's not technical and doesn't pretend to be, he's just pretty switched on and if he doesn't know an answer himself, he knows the person who does.He told me that they were backing things up, everyday they right-clicked on their databases and generated the scripts like they'd always done :pinch:
Well gosh, there is nothing like a backup....and that is nothing like a backup. π
There was a fair bit of confusion at my end when he told me that they were taking backups. I was digging around all over the place trying to work out what we'd missed. I was fully prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. I did not expect him to say that!

Well I guess depending on what options they pick in generate scripts it's technically a backup of some kind?

Steve, please explain how you made the leap from "he's not technical" to "he must be a developer" π

He's not a developer either. According to his email sig, he's a 'Management Information & Insight Analyst', which might as well read 'floogle hoogle hargle bargle' for all it tells me. That said, he is pretty good at what he does but what he does is definitely not technical.

I might have to use that next time I'm filling out job title for a conference badge. π

Just kidding. That was the type of thing that developers do, back up the scripts for their code and ignore the data. I've seen someone do this, thinking they were building some sort of bacpac instead of a dacpac.

Just needs a little refinement:
Lead Floogle-Hoogle Hargle-Bargler
Sounds legit. Something to do with NoSQL, I believe.

No... not what I meant. I mostly stopped watching the "Joe Celko" show. π

Neil,
That's now (at least) two Lead Floogle-Hoogle Hargle-Bargler's, we need someone who is either a F-H H-B, or a junior!
Of course we could just say they are back at the office looking after things π
