Chris Harshman - Thursday, October 25, 2018 10:03 AMWow, just wow, I just got a notice about Microsoft has finally improved the error "Binary or string data would be truncated"completed
This feature is shipped in SQLServer 2017 CU12, SQL Server 2019 CTPand upcoming SQL Server 2016 CP2 CU. Read more at https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sql_server_team/string-or-binary-data-would-be-truncated-replacing-the-infamous-error-8152/

OMG!!! Only a couple decades to fix what should have been relatively simple. This has been a major thorn in my side every time I run into it. Glad this finally going to be addressed.

I've had to rewrite queries quite a few times with lots of column a few times to "SELECT MAX(LEN(col1))... GROUP BY ..." then compare the lengths to the table definition just to find out which column is the culprit. So a welcome fix.

I may have to go burn down our local news radio station...
During the lead-in to a story they've been talking about all day, they keep playing "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas"
IT'S TOO EARLY!
I don't CARE that the state capitol is getting their XMas tree today!
We haven't even reached Halloween yet!!!

The Christmas decoration went up in the complex my office is in at the beginning of this month. We don't even have thanksgiving in the way. π

Well, that's OK, some of the stores here had their Halloween displays up the first week of August so everyone is sick of that by now. :hehe:

Am I really the only one annoyed by Mr. Ansi's "Please post DDL and follow ANSI/ISO standards when asking for help." response to the debate when the question didn't even revolve around needing code but was just a "where's the proof" kind of question.
EDIT: Nevermind. It appears to be part of his signature.

GAH.
I hate having a SSIS package fail and fail again when being run from a job, but works fine from the desktop. And I look and look and look for the problem stated in the error file, but can't find the bloody problem because everything looks right. So then I try closing VS, reopening it, removing the local config file, adding it back, and eventually it's working fine in the job because somehow the problem was a ghost value caught in the package's cache somewhere and not a real problem at all.
Four hours it took me to clear out this ghost value that didn't exist but did. <headdesk>.

This is one of the reasons I hate SSIS so much. When something simple goes wrong it can take hours to figure out exactly what, and where. There are loads of SSIS packages here and many of them aren't sufficiently robust to tolerate even small environmental changes so they break. Most of them would be much easier to fault-find & fix if they were agent-driven stored procedures but no, some idiot liked shiny new SSIS. Technical debt to hell and back. TFIF and an early-finish one, to boot.

I think that the root problem is simply "just because you can do it in SSIS doesn't mean that you should"π
