https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/1978632/Try-catch-block-in-SQL-statement-not-in-TSQLHeh... people wonder why I start interviews with the "How do you get the current date and time" question. This is even worse. I'm totally gob smacked.
How in the hell do these people get jobs that require "some knowledge of SQL"???
WOW...

I'm just pleased as punch that I don't do interviews any more. The parade of derp was seriously disheartening.

Interviews provide mixed emotions for me...
I get really ticked off because these people are occupying jobs at companies and the companies actually do suffer from their ineptitude and there are more capable people out there (even some newbies) that can't get a job because folks like the one in the link have somehow landed the job.
On the other hand, it's a form of entertainment (in the form of a real study of the Dunning-Kruger effect and how to deal with it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect) :Whistling: and helps me keep tabs on what's happening at which companies and also helps me help good local recruiters (that's also a pretty small list) with how to pre-filter their job candidates.

Some of you probably know that I have played bass in several bands over the years. Although I haven't played with a group in a long time. Last fall I was convinced to pull out my trumpet to play with a local brass band. I hadn't played since the late 80s when I played with a couple of local ska bands. Well it didn't take long for several of my old musician friends to catch word that I was playing again and have playing trumpet with a band since January. I have no idea what our "genre" would be. Maybe Brass Rock. We are heavily punk influenced rock band with horns. We have been playing shows since the beginning of March. Tonight we are opening for "Stacked Like Pancakes". They are joining up with the Warped Tour on Saturday. This is the first pretty big band we have played with and hopefully the first good sized crowd.

Lynn Pettis - Thursday, July 19, 2018 1:45 PMNow this is just a little bit scary from someone who has been around SQL Server for 16 years: https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/FindPost1977555.aspx.Or it could just be me, but I was learning about the system tables and views when I first started working with SQL Server. Maybe not all of them but I knew they existed and where to find more information.

😎This is just like the norm in the consulting business, if you are a consultant, the business will never tell you the whole truth (understatement)
And that one cuts both ways: If you're a business, the consultants will never tell you the whole truth.
And it's worse if the consultants are supplied by one of the big consulting outfits, they won't just leave out some of the truth, they'll tell you downright lies with intention to mislead. I concluded long ago that any consulting firm with more than a very small number of consultants couldn't be trusted.

Hmm...
Maybe I'm not as critical at work as I like to pretend...
I took a couple days off last week, had a four-day weekend, left my laptop at work and pretty much ignored the work phone, and...
Nothing happened!
No fires to put out, no "oh god I need this change right now you need to come in to the office" problems, nada...
The one minor issue that cropped up, I e-mailed the dev back about this morning to verify something (he e-mailed about it on Friday, and would've gotten my out-of-office auto-reply) and...
He's out of the office until tomorrow.
So, who knows, maybe come the end of August, I'll be able to leave my work laptop and phone at home...
That'd be nice...
And what does it say about me that I'm going to a big science fiction / fantasy / TV / movies / Anime / costuming / science & tech / horror convention for almost a week, and one of the first panels that caught my attention to attend is from the EFF on "Encrypted DNS and why you should use it at home?"

No one is.
One previous boss used to believe that, so he was at the office everyday until midnight or so. When he took some days off, things actually were smoother and everything was delivered faster. I'm not saying that that's your case, but I would say that anyone is expendable.
We should all take good care of ourselves.

Nicely done, Jason. I was on vacation all last week and didn't check on anything. I didn't receive any texts or phone calls, not that cell phone reception is even close to consistent where I was, but it'll eventually show up as a missed call. Nothing. Granted, I had a volume of email waiting for me when I got back, but that's just normal. There were no emergencies, crises, fires or anything else. It was very nice. It also tells me that everything I have in place worked fine without anyone around to babysit it, which is as it should be.
I'm no so foolish to think that anyone, including myself, is indispensable.
Now, go enjoy your SF convention. 😛
