    I'd ask who he's trolling now, but it doesn't really matter.  It's really unfortunate because nobody wants to listen when he berates people.

    Yup, and that applies all the way around.  I'm a big believer in experience and he's got loads of it.  He's not willing to use it to help others, so I don't know why he bothers posting anywhere.  Like I said, it's unfortunate.

  • Sometimes Mr. Celko actually says something worthwhile, just doesn't seem to happen too often.  Also, he wears sunglasses at night.  Just ignore most of what he says, but watch for those few tidbits that actually make sense.

    We can hope. But it also seems that when provided with a very clear answer they don't get it. If they are an accidental DBA I feel bad for them because they are destined to struggle, or worse.

  • At what point does changing the system in order to get it ready for testing tomorrow morning become not testing properly.  'If we don't run it over Citrix then it works', 'if we use hard coded account details, that solves the problem', 'how about running it on IE instead', none of which will be how it's supposed to be.  Never mind though, at least we met the deadline.

    Yours truly still has two hours worth of log-shipping to set up when it's decided that it's been botched enough to be ready for 0800 tomorrow.  There's an 0500 start to get the replication set up before that. /rant

    Somewhat. I get the frustration with someone not having enough information or knowledge and at each suggestion or item they try, they are still missing knowledge and need to backfill. That can be hard, often because someone doesn't know how to start learning.

    I think that thread was handled well. Lead them, but ask them to do some work and learn. Don't get frustrated when someone is trying, but venting a bit about finding suggestions that make all sorts of assumptions. We struggle with that here, as authors often write from their point of view, the point where someone has the knowledge. Trying to get them to understand not to skip steps or provide links can be hard.

    That OP is frustrated the same way you are with your post, Lynn. They feel they're not getting treated well.

    Last time I had to setup an SFTP solution was around 2007 or 2008 while working at School District 11.  Pretty hard to remember that far back.  I don't even remember what open source 3rd party product we used, just remember that it didn't handle UNC paths so we had to modify that particular SSIS package directly on the server it ran when changes needed to be made.

    Thinking of that, though, I will try to reach out to a friend who still works there.

    In all fairness setting up automated FTP can be incredibly frustrating when it requires anything beyond the most basic FTP tasks.  There's a reason there are huge enterprise level solutions for doing nothing but FTP type tasks.
