Grant Fritchey - Thursday, January 4, 2018 2:40 PMLynn Pettis - Thursday, January 4, 2018 2:16 PMAre you sure of the purity of that snow?
It looks pretty pure, especially now that the sun is down. I'm not validating it's chemical composition because it's too darned cold to go out there to collect it.
If it's Grant's snow, I'm surprised that it's not yellow...

Steve Jones - SSC Editor - Thursday, January 4, 2018 1:13 PMFWIW, a summary page for the Meltdown/Spectre CPU bugs is up: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/SQL+Server/166822/
Comments , missing links ,etc. welcome.
Thanks Steve. Looks like the Ubuntu Patches are out on January 9th: https://insights.ubuntu.com/2018/01/04/ubuntu-updates-for-the-meltdown-spectre-vulnerabilities/
Edit: Firstly, oh good, the everything after you've added a hyperlink is a hyperlink "feature" of SSC. 🙂
Anyway, interesting, as well, that the patches for SQL Server are only KB's at the moment. No (current) sign of the patches for Linux/Docker.

Can I just point out how much I love this site because of things like the main article in today's newsletter...
And here's a link of interest if you haven't seen it yet (I haven't caught up on The Thread to see if anyone else posted it yet): http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-meltdown-spectre-patches-if-you-havent-got-them-blame-your-antivirus/

ARGH!
What a *lovely* start (or, perhaps more appropriately, NON-start) to the day...
Go out to the garage to head in to work, car won't turn over, battery barely is able to crank the car.
No place that I could get a battery opens until 7:30, my supervisor is off today, his boss (who we should be contacting,) still hasn't gotten anyone his direct number, AND it's the end of the pay period which ought to make switching my hours from "hours worked" to "leave" loads of fun, and on top of all that, I need to get a battery and install it...
Which, none of the local auto-parts places even list my car in their online selection tool despite it being a 2013 model...
So I'm probably going to be stuck taking it up to the dealer (if I can get it started with a jump from the wifes' car.)
OK, ranting over.
Oh, and yes, I am considering swapping the battery myself, unlike some cars it's not buried somewhere unreachable, except for the fact that my garage is freezing cold...

Batteries are relatively easy to swap out. It's the disposal issue that should concern you. And any corrosion on the leads. Wear thick heavy chemical resistant gloves (not the ones you use for cold weather) when you do it.

And yes, I just womansplained how to change a car battery. Feels good to be the one doing the "splaining" for once. @=)

😀:hehe:
*I'm* not complaining.
Most stores that sell car batteries will also take the old ones for recycling, at a fee, of course.
Because I'm lazy and don't feel like freezing my hands off I'm going to call my dealer and see what it would cost there, first...

Back on the topic of the day / week, I was wondering this morning if and how bad Spectre / Meltdown is going to affect Oracle databases.
I don't have any Oracle to worry about, by a couple of my former co-workers (who moved to a different division) do have an Oracle setup to deal with...
Some quick Google doesn't find anything that I could see, but I would almost expect Oracle to be hit as hard as SQL.

Yeah, the disposal (at least here in Michigan) is pretty simple. I don't blame you for not wanting to do it yourself. It's -5 F this morning and the real feel temp is -20 F according to the radio. If you have a favorite garage where you take your car, I'm sure they'll have sources where they can get your battery. There's also the dealer. Of course, if a shop buys it, you'll pay the markup on it, but the labor shouldn't be bad. The obvious exception is if you're driving an exotic car, which you'd better not be driving in the winter.

I saw some tests done against PostgreSQL that showed a small, but non-trivial, slow down. I also have seen several tests that show the biggest negative impact is on I/O against SSDs, which makes me really sad. I have yet to see any tests against SQL Server or Oracle.

Guess we are going to see some kind of mitigation such as white list of executable code etc. very soon.

Most places that sell batteries require a core deposit which you get back when you take in the old one. You can avoid a second trip by taking it with you when you go to purchase a new one. Most of the car parts places and even Walmart will take an old car battery and dispose of it properly. Some of them even offer a small amount of payment if you bring them old batteries.

It sounds like there is no mitigation short of just not patching your servers because of where the exploits happen.
