TomThomson - Monday, November 6, 2017 11:12 AMEd Wagner - Friday, November 3, 2017 10:57 AMLuis Cazares - Friday, November 3, 2017 10:40 AMJoe’s Big Deal: the vNext query processor gets even better. Joe, Kevin Farlee, and friends are working on the following improvements:
- Table variable deferred compilation – so instead of getting crappy row estimates, they’ll get updated row estimates much like 2017’s interleaved execution of MSTVFs. >
- Batch mode for row store – in 2017, to get batch mode execution, you have to play tricks like joining an empty columnstore table to your query. vNext will consider batch mode even if there’s no columnstore indexes involved. >
- Scalar UDF inlining – so they’ll perform like inline table-valued functions, and won’t cause the calling queries to go single-threaded. >
The inlining SF looks very promising. Then again, a lot of SQL 2017 looks great. I'll believe it when I test it. 😉
The TV deferred compilation looks interesting too. I wonder when we'll see SQL 2018.
I hope they don't accelerate the major release any more than they already have. Hopefully it's SQL 2020, but probably SQL 2019. SQL 2020 would be cool because there's some good marketing plays there with vision and all that.

Let's just say things could be a lot better. Didn't really get good news yesterday. There is a strong possibility the bone broke due to cancer. Simply put, I'm scared.

This was the first message I saw this morning, and my first thought was, I hope Lynn's okay. Glad to hear it wasn't you, but when I went back through messages, I was saddened to hear about your father.
Hope things turn out okay. Sending good karma your way.

Which would be a lot less distasteful if his berating wasn't generally flawed. He makes such sweeping statements about many things that simply are not true. For example in that thread he talks about GTIN and UPC. The company I work for is a major player in our business globally. We manufacture products that are used in the manufacture of other products everywhere on the entire planet. NONE of our products have a GTIN or UPC, not a single one. We still manage to have branches in several countries and sell our products in over 100 countries worldwide.
And his notion that commas belong only the end of the line is just absurd. He claims is hearkens back to FORTRAN or COBOL and punch cards. Who cares??? I prefer a comma at the beginning of my line because....well....I prefer it that way. And frankly his lack of formatting in both his DDL and DML make me shudder. It is like he feels there is a prize for using as few characters as possible. For heaven's sake, a space after a comma and some white space for legibility. Or at the very least learn how to use the WYSIWIG formatting tool he is using for posting.

More than that, he trolls people and I believe it's intentional. Some of the stuff he comes up with defies reason.

You realize, of course, that we can no longer be friends now, right? :hehe:
The comma thing is a pet peeve of mine, but I suspect it's because I'm a writer. It's not good prose to stick a punctuation mark at the beginning of a line to my mind. On the other hand, I'm not likely to berate people or go on tirades about it. I just shudder, groan, and continue on with the work because SQL Server actually scripts out stuff like that (even though it shouldn't).

Right there with you. We'll have to remove Sean from the island.... Or, everyone gets a copy of SQL Prompt and then we can easily fix the syntax so that it's right for us.

So much fun going on this month...
Getting a new boss, moving into a new cube farm (but at least I get a window, downside, I also get my supervisor as a cube-mate,) trying to reschedule my server patching to the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving so I can enjoy the long weekend (normally I'd be patching the 25th...) and I've got one customer fussing about it...
Add to that my supervisor is out until the 20th so I can't pull him in, my ability to work Saturdays to patch is predicated on the boss agreeing to an "under-the-table" comptime system that I don't know if the new boss will agree to, and, well...
Maybe I'll throw in the towel, move my once-a-week telework day to the Saturdays that I patch the servers and be done with it...
Which would *ALSO* require boss sign-off...

I would certainly not go on a tirade about why my opinion is so much more relevant than somebody else's because <...ring knock...>. I can certainly live with trailing commas without being a big deal. But I really prefer to use: ColumnAlias = <Expression> which I can't seem to get people to do. And one line per column in the code please. 🙂
