Is there a tool like SSMS that can be run on a Mac or Linux laptop?

    Run SSMS inside a container?

Unless my understanding of containers is wrong/dated, can't they only be the same as the host OS. Thus Windows can only run Windows Containers, Linux can only run Linux Containers, etc. To run a Windows container on a Docker/Linux host you'd firstly need a Windows VM on the Host, but then you might as well just run SSMS on the VM.

You can actually get around that. I've been running SQL Server on Linux in a container without installing a full-blown Linux VM. Works really well.

On Win 10, there's a Linux Subsystem. I think that's what makes this work. Ubuntu containers are supported. Not sure about RHEL or CentOS. But this is the same reason you can run Bash on Windows.

The downside to working from home is, if the cats decide it's the season to start throwing up on the carpet, you kind of need to clean it up instead of pretending you don't see it until the wife gets home and notices it...

I got to mop up urine yesterday when a dog  made a mess between conference calls.

Yeah, but both pale in comparison to baby spit up and other issues. When he wants his diaper changed or decides he's hungry, it doesn't matter how urgent the project I'm working on is or what meeting / conference call I'm online with.

And I've only been back to work two days as of now... Sigh. Parenthood. What a joy. Still, he's very warm and cuddly at this age. I "wore him" to my home office yesterday.

  • This really isn't SQL related (well it isn't at all apart from my attempt to get multiple SQL instances running on a single Linux Machine), but anyone got any experience with Containers on Ubuntu 16.04? I've set one up, but I'd like it to use the DHCP on my home network, not what the host machine assigns it. This means I'd be able to access it by SSH directly, rather than having to SSH to the host, and then SSH to the IP, not the name, of the container (or use lxc exec [ContainerName] bash).

When I successfully set up the container to use the network DHCP, however, the host loses the internet. It's as if I can have the host on the the network, and the containers effectively in a kind of DMZ, or have the containers using the network DHCP and the host is a magical no man's land with no access to anything (including the containers apart from via lxc exec).

Been trying to configure this several times today and I'm at my wits end now. No amount of Googling provides an answer that works (different solutions all seem to give the same result)... I give up. 🙁

If anyone has any insight would be great. Thanks.

I think I already suggested this before, but this thread is SOOOO LONG!

If you're fine with paying like $20 a month, there is DataGrip from JetBrains. It installs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It's highly customizable is a GUI for database objects, has code completion, code generation, import/export, etc. The company is pretty flexible too. If you reach out and tell them your needs like only wanting to license DataGrip for X number of employees, they would prob customize an agreement with you, especially if you cite you rather use SSMS as opposed to DataGrip. Right now, the monthly sub is for access with all of their other awesome IDE's including DataGrip.

Do you need DHCP? I tend to aim for static IPs for my VMs to be sure I know where I'm connecting.

Yes, it'll be a static IP, but is not in the same IP range. It's using a bridge with a different subset, that doesn't talk to the outside network and vice versa (apart from the internet).

Given the two personalities involved, that would be a fun one to watch, wouldn't it? 😛
