So, I haven't posted in this topic, but started following it because it had a decent amount of activity...
https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/1889617/Need-help-in-SQL-table-for-updating-NULLS?PageIndex=1
At this point, it's starting to read like your typical "I need to do this thing I told the bosses I could do but I don't know how to do it so will you consult for me for free and tell me how to do it" type topics...
I don't mind helping, although my level of tolerance for what seem to be homework or people looking for free consulting has gotten so high I think I'm even skipping "real" topics...

Good grief if that isn't a classic X-Y problem I don't know what one is. They have complete garbage for data, nothing resembling normalization, no ability to explain what they want and determined to use a certain technology to solve it. Run away....fast. I think it is a real topic but the OP doesn't know what they want, only the technology to solve it.

I looked at that one a while back and figured it would turn into a fiasco. They don't know what they want and, to this point, can't seem to get past needing an ORDER BY if they want an order. There's a lot missing there.

Agreed. I think the biggest thing missing is on the other side of the internet. Wait I think I know where it is...right there between the chair and the keyboard. AKA PEBKAC

They finally posted a field that can be used as an order and I just posted two almost identical solutions. It does involve several layers of complexity, and I can see them not being able to untangle those layers given their difficulty in even describing the problem.

This one is clearly a homework questions: https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/FindPost1890108.aspx
What is truly "amusing" though, is they posted their homework question in Jeff's Forum Etiquette article on how to post questions. :hehe:

It's a question from one of the practice exams for certifications.

Well, your question is more than valid. If he's already done the work without a cursor, why try to figure out how to do it with one? Here's hoping he gets your point.

I just got an email containing this:
Luis,
Do you have any update on adding the indexes on production.
Don't you love when the requirements are so vague that they look like part of a job posting?
BTW, I'm a dev DBA, not system DBA. I shouldn't touch production.

- Add more indexing to the SQL DBA

I'm not so sure that DBAs like being indexed.

Hmmm...add indexing to the DBA? I guess you can write on yourself... 🙂
