Starting a 4 day weekend here in the U.S. as we celebrate our Independence on Tuesday. I am actually leaving the office about 11am today to go to Scout camp and help tear down the huge tents and such after the boys get all their stuff out.

Nice. I'm done at noon, which is the same time because you're in Central and I'm in Eastern.
I've got a pork shoulder and a pork loin ready to go in the smoker this weekend. I'll do the loin to temperature, but I'm going to go 14 hours on the shoulder so all that collagen in the connective tissue breaks down into gelatin. To me, it's completely worth the time. I'm using 100% apple wood.

Awesome!!! My smoker is on hiatus at the moment. :crying: I tore out the deck earlier this spring because it was literally falling off the house. I am replacing it with a pave stone patio. I just got a pallet of stones delivered Wednesday so I think we know what my "vacation" weekend is going to entail. I am thinking I may just set up the smoker on the driveway on Tuesday anyway and throw on some ribs. They don't take too long so I can still get some work done.

And we can't resist, especially when it is one of our own that needs help.

First thing I will say, is that cursors may be evil but they also have their place. If that is what works best, nothing wrong with using it, I just like to explore all options.
I may still look at other options just because I want to see what other alternatives exist.

Well, I guess the Guard Hippo thought it was okay since I started asking questions.

Chris Harshman - Friday, June 30, 2017 8:51 AMOK, I've even tried using XCOPY /L /S /D to try to limit the filenames returned by date, so I only get a few thousand instead of the millions and millions of files, but this command still seems to take 3 or 4 minutes to just get this list. Thanks again to everyone who tried to look at this, but the cursor based approach runs entirely in under a minute for me, so I'm sticking with this:
Agreed. If you know the full path to a file, then that would be equivalent to an "Index Seek" rather than a scan across millions of rows in a hierarchical fashion.
However, if you really do have millions of files in a relatively unstructured folder structure, it might be time to add some structure. π

I would check how many unique location are stored in the table.
If there are no too many of them then I'd create a cursor for DIR each of them, no /S option.
I'd also consider extension filter. You must be looking for files of a specific type. Must be speeding up the process as well.

Some people are kinda getting on my nerves.
People who are the excellent at something usually don't have to go around proclaiming that fact.
