Are the posted questions getting worse?

    Happy Saturday, everyone

I appear to have won a year's licence for Quest's Spotlight for Sql Server, after filling in my details at their booth at the SQLBits conference!

    Does anyone here use it?

Why is it my first thought was "yeah, you and everyone else that filled in their details"?

I haven't heard of this tool... maybe you and/or Paul can write an article about it?

Ummmm.... my rule of thumb is to peel one potato at a time on the quirky update...

Hey Jeff, I remember reading a post where you loaded in a massive file in microseconds (astonishing all others that were working on the problem)... do you happen to have a link to that thread so I can review it again?

    Thanks,

I didn;t hear so from a group of friends who I bumped into at SQLBits (Edit: I mean they handed over their details too)

At any rate, they haven't been pestering me with spam or anything!

Heh, maybe I can write one from the bemused beginner's point of view 🙂

    Heh. Not going to happen!

There a free trial available (inevitably) and a pretty good video demo on the Quest website http://www.quest.com/spotlight-on-sql-server-enterprise/. If you watch the video, be sure to skip the really boring slides and scoot on through to the pretty graphics :w00t:

Well (and yes, that is a mighty deep subject for a weekend) I have our newbie some homework and advice. Let's see if he takes it or slams me.

It took an enormous effort of will on my part not to post sarcastic and/or deliberately wrong answers.

    Sigh.

I doubt he'll be able to complete ur task in one weekend. even the overview of these topics will require lots of time which i doubt he's willing to give. Looks like more of a 'lazy' fella who needs one liner answers to boast amongst his frens in school.:hehe: I really want him to give more time studying these topics.

ummm.. i think we need to give him fair amount of chance to prove that he's willing to learn. He can obviously fast track his learnings here.

Okay, I just reread my post and I don't see any where that I gave him a time limit on completing the homework. Plus, I really don't think these questions are actual school work but interview questions, and as such we really shouldn't be giving him answers. He needs to figure them out himself and then, if he still has problems understanding the underlying concepts, ask meaningful questions to help improve his understanding.

If we just give him answers and he ends up in a position that he isn't qualified for do, who's fault is it, ours or the employer who hired him?

    Ultimately...his! 🙂

Unfortunately, we'd be just as guilty. Ethics is not something you choose to follow one day and not on another. It has to be a way of life and you have to stick to it even when others are saying that it doesn't matter, because it does.

So, my ethics say I'm not helping him until he helps himself. I am more than willing to help him understand the concepts and tasks asked in his questions, but I will not just give him answers that may in the long run hurt him and any employers that may hire him.

I would not have answered a single question on that particular post. In fact, the only thing I might have posted had I been the first one there is "Nobody answer these, please. Asking a laundry list of questions that could be interview or homework questions is not appropriate on this forum".

Well... alright.... I'd have asked just one question... "Dude! What do you want on your pork chops!?" 😛
