Is this a little backwards or is it just me?
Staples has an online coupon that gives $50 off a Dell PC if you purchase a Dell Monitor.
That used to be the other way around, didn't it?

Maybe they expect less coupons redeemed this way.

"I was authorized to trash my employer's network, sysadmin tells court"Regardless of whether the guy wins or loses his appeal...
Ouch. That is really going to cause issues in a lot of places.
Interesting. Must be a Progressive lawyer with no common sense. I can see changes in employment agreements whether he wins or loses. Companies will want to protect themselves regardless of the outcome of the appeal. If I were a business owner or C-level employee I would do what was reasonably needed to protect the business.

On something completely different, I was just looking at an internal database built by a developer. If I posted this database schema here you would see Mr. Celko galloping in on his white horse. Every table has a primary key with the name "id".
Actually, I can see his point on this one as I am looking at this database.

I read through the first 30-40 pages of the appeal that was filed and sure enough it consistently refers to the words "without authorization". Simply because this person had the security clearance to do these things it is clear that this person was acting with retribution and attempt to hurt their business. The steps taken while are clearly part of the every day doings add up to nothing short of premeditated malice. It makes things so vague that it will have a large impact on the contracts that employee and employer have to negotiate. Truly sad that this was even allowed to be filed, even more pathetic is I have a gut feeling this guy is going to walk away from this.

Having every table with a primary key name of id is one of the things that I totally agree with Joe on. It is just awful. It forces one of my biggest pet peeves in data design which is a single piece of information (column) having different names across the system. And everything being id forces that for sure. If it is a PersonID it should be a PersonID in every single table. Sure it makes Person.PersonID a little redundant but better than weird predicates like "p.ID = someOtherTable.PersonID". 😀

Sean, I am actually agreeing with you and Joe on this, just that if I posted he'd ride in on his white horse and beat me over the head.
Also, I have a feeling this may have been partly done through the tool they used to build the database and application code. I may be wrong, however.

Now this sounds like it has an interesting story behind it...Grant Fritchey (10/12/2016)
I'm the guy who helped a developer send porn to our client list (I didn't clean up prod data before supplying it to the dev team, a lot of very long meetings followed). That's about the whole story. I was supplying production data to the devs, as per usual. We didn't have a policy in place to clean the data first and it was early in my career as a DBA. Said developer had a sense of humor. He was testing email automation through one of our apps and used the email addresses in the database. He sent a porn picture as his test. Insane, long-*** meetings followed. Huzzah!
Well accidents do happen like forgetting to cleanse the data. But sending porn through the company email system, even as a joke, is wholly inexcusable. That would be grounds for instant termination in any company I have worked for. I can only imagine the meetings afterwards and the communications sent to your customers/clients. :w00t:
Yeah - definite grounds for termination. I must admit that's one reason to anonymize test data that I never even considered.
LMAO
:hehe:
I wonder how many other times this has happened?

I don't quite feel your pain, but I'm in the midst of migrating a handful of DBs to a new server. One is ~134GB of data, the DBs are all TDE'ed, and I don't have (and couldn't get in the time available) enough room on the source server to run a backup to. So I'm backing up across the network to the new server...At least I've got an all-day window to do this, but it gets boring watching the percentages...
Tell me about it. I've had to do that before. And then, right at the last minute, the backup fails because of a network error.
I swear, if you've jinxed me on this...I have a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you un-jinx me right now, you will never hear from me again. But if you leave me jinxed, I will find you, and I will feed you to the hippo.:hehe:
Ummm. Oh, wait. I still have a pork chop launcher... BRING IT ON!:w00t:
Watch it, you two, or I'll have to let the Hippo deal with you both!
The hippo is back!

That is actually quite a useful post from JOE - it gives a pretty clear picture of some of the holes you'll fall into if you insist on one true lookup table. It pushes some of the deplorable aspects of the SQL standards too, but in a fairly harmless manner in the context of the rest of the post. And unlike many of Joe's posts, the idea that it might be a good idea to provide code in standard SQL is put as a polite request instead of as an insulting rant. He should be encouraged to post like this instead of using his adopted style of ranting.
