Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Snow last week and had to take my wife to the doctor (unreleated). slipped in the x5, with summer tires.

Had to go buy some winter versions, and new wheels.

Was going to test them out today, but apprently I-70 is closed near Vail and lots of plows out before then with avalanche dangers. Decided not to risk it.

I had a brainstorm yesterday. I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to try and get some coding basics sessions together for the local SQL Saturdays, strictly for the kids. Give the younger set some time to learn basics.

I mean, get 'em while they're young and you have a chance to keep girls in STEM, right?

Basics and intro sessions are almost always well attended and they're very useful. We constantly have new people joining the profession.

Agreed. And "Performance Sells". If you can also explain early in life why certain things are done for performance and scalability, you'll need a bigger room.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

I really would like to attend Bits this year (hint, hint)

    DITTO!

    (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

I will definitely attend (present a precon so need to be there anyway). But it'd be nice to get to present at least one regular session as well.

    (just sayin)

Wise of you. Pending natural disasters are not something to play with.

  • I feel the unbearable need to brag and no one here would understand why I think I did such an awesome process design.

I work with data scientists who use ad-hoc data sets a LOT. They need to join this up with production data. Can't link dev and prod servers. Can't write to prod servers.

Can't wait 3 to 10 days for the DBAs to work a ticket.

Here's the solution I worked out with my favorite senior DBA. He trusts me, btw.

1 - Create database on dev that everyone can create/modify/delete/whatever.

2 - Create job and special named account to run said job that will back up the dev database and restore it to prod. (As I said they trust me and there's no one else here I can share it with so I'm not the only one.)

3 - Give me the account so that I can connect and run the job.

Whammo! Timely push of data to production whilst not violating a single security rule!

Of course now all the DBAs will find all the ways this can go wrong. But I'm still darn proud of finding a way to do what they said couldn't be done in our environment!

We can change font and write questions in Comic Sans?  Really?

Apparently we can also like posts now. Which increases my reputation? What's reputation? Is it the points? If I like everything will I be able to catch up with Gail? So many questions!

And where's the dang quote button?

It's that "Multiquote" button.  Click on that (and, presumably, several others) and then click on the quoted reply button that appears bottom right.

That is pretty damn awesome 🙂
Now I wonder if the quote bug is still present.

  • There's a pinned thread for forum issues, requests, complaints and (maybe) nice things too, here: https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1849962.aspx

We're going to be logging issues and working through what we can in coming days.

Yeah, but I can't ding people for annoying the Hippo. Which is disappointing.
