Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Ah, what a lovely morning this has been...

We got around 3" of snow last night, the heavy, wet, packs into really nice snowballs type of snow. No biggie, it's only a couple inches.

Except the county didn't roll the plows and salt trucks. My normal 30 minute drive to work took an hour, the roads were crap and slick, and I've got a little rear-wheel drive sporty car.

Then get to work, and the parking lots hadn't been plowed or the sidewalks cleared. Usually the company that handles snow removal is out plowing about the time the snow starts, now I'm worried I'm going to get plowed in...

To top it all off, it's currently misting / raining and that's supposed to possibly freeze (until this afternoon when we're supposed to climb into the low 40s before getting cold again...)

Makes me wish I'd called the boss after I got up and asked to telework for the day...

Winter tyres. My wife has a rear-wheel drive sporty car and it was terrifying in the winter. Then somebody suggested winter tyres and it is wonderful. They don't have to be expensive - mid-range tyres are quite a good price.

I've actually got winter tires (on cheap steel rims) on the car...

    πŸ™‚

Got them the second winter I had the car, after one winter on the summer performance tires. Yeah...

    That was "exciting" for sure.

This is the sensible option. I had to do it last Thursday when we had > a month's worth of rain in a single day.

    Eirikur and Chris,

Sorry for the late notice but I only booked today!

I'm near Oxford Circus tomorrow for a camera flash course. It finishes at 4 30. So could meet up? I'll be parking on the outskirts on the central line, so Holborn would be easy πŸ˜‰

Edit: obviously this is for Brandies benefit as well, so she can keep up with the meeting in London soap opera :w00t:

    Cheers,

    Rodders...

    Aren't you adorable?

    πŸ˜‰

Haha I may have to quote you on that... :w00t:

The course was really good. I now have a far better idea of using the flash. And especially off camera flash. I will certainly do part 2. Given me some ideas for the next SQL Sat where I am taking pictures. I guess I should now get back to securing a new contract and get back to that SQL thing!

Sadly no meet up. So I'm at Caffe Vergnano 1882 in honour anyway!

    Cheers,

    Rodders...

I used to think it odd that people that people I've interviewed with more than 5 years of "experience" with SQL Server that made the claim of being a DBA on their resume couldn't answer even simple questions. With the growing number of posts like the following from people that have been a been member of SSC for more than 8 years like the following, I'm beginning to see that it's the norm rather than the exception.

    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1831422-3739-1.aspx

I'm no longer disappointed. Just amazed... particularly in the fact that this person still has a job.

Why are you amazed? It's happening all over....someone gets a job they aren't qualified for but can get answers from the internet...company is happy because they can pay a low salary and still get the work done. Isn't that kind of what 'off shoring/outsourcing' is doing a lot of times? And the 5 years experience isn't really a lie - it's more bending the truth. They do have 5 years experience, but it is 5 years of getting help from other sources and not having to know the information themselves.

Wow. I haven't talked to any of you guys since last year. Happy New Year, I hope everyone is doing well.

Quick question(s). Does anyone here hold a CISSP cert?

The SO is studying for the exam, pointed out to me and mentioned that I probably wanted to take it too. At first glance it looks like something I'm interested in. The only problem is I'm going to need a sponsor for post-exam stuff. So, if anyone here has it, would you be willing to sponsor me when I pass the exam?

If not, I understand. But I am curious still as to who has the cert and how useful it's been to you.

First, good luck on the CISSP cert...it's tough.

One of my previous companies did intrusion detection, so they sent a few of us to a CISSP boot camp. Had a great week and ended up taking the test the last day. Two of us passed (five took the test the last day). I never heard of needing a sponsor, but I guess my company filled that need. I never had a use for it in my job, it was just a checkbox to fill; which was a shame as it was really useful information. Mine has expired and as I said, I really never got any real use out of it.

I did learn a lot from it as it covers everything about security - how high fences should be, difference between types of sprinkler systems: dry, wet, etc; not just computer security.

    -SQLBill

edited to change 'that day' to 'the last day' as the boot camp was a week long.

Oh come on, if I recall you're in Florida, what "anything" do you have to go through?

Maybe the occasional alligator in the road, but that's better called a "speed bump."

    :-D:-P;-)

I mean really, how bad can the roads get in a hurricane, it's just water on the roads?

It's actually really hard to drive when your car is floating or flying. Absolutely no traction there.

Bah, if your car is floating, that's when you use your snowbrush as a paddle and keep going.

If it's flying, well, then I want one, we were promised flying cars by the Jetsons' and I want my flying car dang it!

Oh crap! Only just found this. I'm 100 yards from Piccadilly Circus, a mere 7 minutes walk from Oxford Circus and 10 minutes on foot from just about anywhere in Soho!

It's taken the best part of seven months to rebuild the main bathroom at home. New floor, walls, ceiling and window. A proper plumber raised the service pipes through the new floor to about 6". I took it from there: radiator, bath, shower, loo, and sink, and lighting. Bought, fitted, tested, tiled and grouted and now in use with some minor decorative stuff remaining. Whilst I've been doing this I've been out of circulation, not just because it's been a lot of time & effort, but also because an evening off meant completion was pushed back by a day. The project made me proper grumpy too because it was difficult and risky. It's nice to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, and to know I can say "Yes! I'll be there..." without any second thoughts, when someone says they are going to be in the area.

    Sorry I missed it Rodders.
