What a morning. SSC just broke my heart.I see an article about time traveling listed in the newsletter. Get ready to read it and realize, it's not talking about building a TARDIS.
Shattered, I tell you. I'm absolutely shattered.
π
Bah, such a banal device to travel time in, a Call Box, I mean really? Where's the style, the flash, the panache?
Give me a Delorean any day (ideally after a motor swap to a HellCat motor, keep the Mr Fusion to run the time circuits)
With the TARDIS all the flash, style and panache is on the inside. It's typical British understatement π
Yes it is!

Wow, just read the comments on Reddit about a recent blog post... ouch.
Evidently stating the obvious when others are stating the opposite is not allowed amongst those who know what the obvious thing is. Crap.

obtuseness...
There is a word I do not come across very often. Have to remember to use it on occasion as it does describe various situations.
π
I probably could have used intransigence as well...
The manager in question was averse to implementing DHCP many years back, said manager wanted to continue to statically and manually assign IPs to each computer, server, and printer, then track the IPs in an Excel spreadsheet...
This for an office that was growing at a moderate rate and already had ~50 server / PCs / printers.
Also while sticking with each login having to be manually added to each device / resource the user would require...
I think most of the push back against DHCP was because it was part of a push to deploy Active Directory as well (and this being a "M$" product was probably 90% of the problem for the manager in question...)
So this Manager(?) is leaving lots of room to standardize and improve the process.
At some point someone above will catch on.
And the first co$t $aving measure might send them looking for a new job.
Hope they are not proud of that process, definitely an interview ender.
While there is plenty of room for improvement, it's unlikely to change or that said manager will be put out at the curb. Said manager has been there for well over 20yrs, in pretty much the same position, so...
It's one thing to do each PC as a one-off at home, but in a business environment it really behooves them to standardize, both on the equipment as on the deployment.
I've groused about this employer / manager in the past, when I still worked there, it's likely you can find some of that ranting in this thread...
I've seen people doing this type of thing longer let go.
All it takes is for someone new to come in and shed some light on what's going on, or a dip in business and they start looking toward doing more with less.
Probably as frustrating for any tech as the users. Every system deployed is likely a different puzzle.
As much as I dislike the standard image ( as a Developer I was always trying new software ), I supported it. And learned to leverage AD Groups rather than bury access in SQL and SSAS. Which was huge for me - people changed departments, and access changed with them.
The illusion that if you make your job over complicated, they cannot replace you, often has the opposite effect.
You are the constraint holding the company back most of the time.

I second this. It's not a long blog post β I understood within about 10 seconds of reading what was being demonstrated. But many of the posters β presumably mostly IT professionals with ADD β did not even get that far. They just had a Pavlovian response to SELECT * and started ranting. We're on your side, Grant.

Wow, there are some abrasive people/comments there, many with a severe reading comprehension disability. The article was very clear (at least to me) and the examples the half-wits are throwing back are not the same. The internet sure makes it easy for people to hide behind a keyboard and play the tough-guy role.

Yeah I am shocked at how strong people's word are when they are separated by a monitor. They say things online they would never even consider saying in real life. Add to that their obvious inability to actually read and you get a whole list of stupid comments discussing a topic that is different from the article.
Sadly, these half-wits or more-offs are the same people who are going to be voting for a new president soon. They can't even bother to read 4 paragraphs of an article before jumping to conclusions. I can hear them saying "Don't bother me with the facts, my mind is already made up".
Grant - I am impressed with your level of professionalism and not letting those slogs get to you.

I was supposed to be doing a 2 hour hand over with one of the devops.
He put the meeting in outlook, but forgot to include the room, so someone else has booked it.
I hadn't realised Outlook still required the room to be an 'attendee' to the meeting still. And not just selecting it as the location.
That also bugged me. Well OK I've fallen foul to it on more than one occasion π
Funny thing is, the meeting has been cancelled but Skype for Business still thinks I'm in a meeting. Nice.
Got about 80% of my picks for summit done. One difficult hour, and one I have no idea what to do. So might go hang out at the community zone (CZ) - except it Friday at 8 am :O
Left one gap for the CZ so far.

As Michael Gove said during the Brexit campaign, 'people in this country have had enough of experts.' Sadly, it appears that even on a global scale, he's right.
