even 20 years agoEven 20 years ago! Even? I was 13 years into my IT career 20 years ago - it wasn't that far back!
Last week some staff in this office were talking about the new Westworld series - "Based on some really old movie". I watched that movie in the cinema when it first came out. It was in colour too - with sound. They even gave the organist the day off.
Back to my comfy chair in the corner. I hope they've mashed my food properly this time.
Geez, I'm starting to feel like the young whippersnapper here...
20 years back I was a lowly phone tech support guy for a order-by-catalog computer parts company (they still listed 8" floppy disks and 1/2" reel-to-reel magnetic tape in the catalog at that time)
I do recall the original Westworld (though I never saw it,) the VHS box cover in the rental store, Yul Brenners face hinged to the side and the machinery underneath was eye catching...

20 years ago I was at University. 2nd year specifically, Maths, Physics, Computer Science.
And I'm one of the oldest people at my current company (CEO is 2 years younger than I am)

I watched your sqlbits conference ( first time I got to see what you look like) I thought you were mid 30s..
p.s. I am curious what programming languages did you do back then at Uni?

Not too far off. 40 later this year and you either watched last year or the year before's SQLBits.

C++ mostly, Modula2 (Pascal-alike), did some 8086 and Sun Sparc assembler, not much though. AI was done in Prolog (Expert systems, not very relevant today)
They were starting to phase Java in as a starting language for the 1st years when I left.

I'd just started my first year doing Ocean Science. I'm now one of the youngest at my place.

20 years ago I was still working as a chef and playing in punk bands. Last album I was on was released 20 years ago. 19 years ago I made the decision to switch careers and went back to college for a second round. π

I was walking in 1973. Even had my first concussion and broken bone by then.
20 years ago I was still thinking my future was as a basketball coach, had been married for a year, and had just bought my first computer. I got a late start in IT. I was still 3 years away from my first job in IT as a Jr. Software Developer working in VB6 and SQL Server.
I'm in the lower middle of the age range in IT at my current gig as most people at my company have been there for 15+ years and it isn't their first job in IT.

WOW...http://www.sql-datatools.com/2016/05/sql-queries-tuning-and-optimization.html
This is supposed to be a list of things to do to optimize queries. While some of these are valid most of them lack context or explanation. And some of them are just plain awful.
