Now this sounds like it has an interesting story behind it...

I'm the guy who helped a developer send porn to our client list (I didn't clean up prod data before supplying it to the dev team, a lot of very long meetings followed).

(Original topic over here, if you're interested)

That's about the whole story. I was supplying production data to the devs, as per usual. We didn't have a policy in place to clean the data first and it was early in my career as a DBA. Said developer had a sense of humor. He was testing email automation through one of our apps and used the email addresses in the database. He sent a porn picture as his test. Insane, long-*** meetings followed. Huzzah!

Well accidents do happen like forgetting to cleanse the data. But sending porn through the company email system, even as a joke, is wholly inexcusable. That would be grounds for instant termination in any company I have worked for. I can only imagine the meetings afterwards and the communications sent to your customers/clients. :w00t:

Yeah - definite grounds for termination. I must admit that's one reason to anonymize test data that I never even considered.

Sending it? I believe that just having it in the company's computer might be cause for termination.

Especially if it turns out to be a certain type of porn that the feds might find illegal.

That beats the one I have about the company I was working for sending out insurance cover notes (y'know, legal documents) which contained a line of test data left over from when we were developing the print engine... The line in question was something like "I like donkeys".

Oddly enough, we only ever got one complaint about it, which just goes to show how often people look at the small print...

[disclaimer: no, it wasn't me that put that line there, but I do remember the perp's name...]

  • So 3 things...

    1. Got an email from Grant yesterday that made me feel all warm and fuzzy, well I think that was the intention 😉

    2. 10 days until I fly to the USA, so that also means only 7 days left in the office, well a bit of today...

    3. SQLSat Portsmouth has gone live

  • I was surprised that the developer wasn't fired, but since I also expected to be fired, I sure didn't complain about it.

I guess twenty years ago places were a little more lax than they are today. Best I got.

  • Grant, you mentioned Mens Rea in another thread (which is not a term you often hear) and it reminded me of a funny scene from "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" with Gene Wilder. May he rest in peace...man I loved his movies when I was younger.

I would've expected the dev to get fired, although not so much you (unless there was a data-scrub policy in place, that you were aware of, and ignored) Most places, it seems, even 20 years ago would come down hard on someone with porn on their work computer.

Hi guys, is anyone willing (and kind enough) to review a post I am doing on SQL Memory? Basically I want to talk about total vs target and show how it translates to perfmon and what happens if I change settings etc... I am 90% sure what I have done is correct, but if I mess this up I will look a bit of a wolly....

Full credit will be given in the article.

    I'll have a look.

    😎

AHH sorry Eirikur - just seen your reply too (already replied to Gail). Thanks for offering though. You have always been kind to me.

    No worries mate;-)

    😎

    even 20 years ago

Even 20 years ago! Even? I was 13 years into my IT career 20 years ago - it wasn't that far back!

Last week some staff in this office were talking about the new Westworld series - "Based on some really old movie". I watched that movie in the cinema when it first came out. It was in colour too - with sound. They even gave the organist the day off.

Back to my comfy chair in the corner. I hope they've mashed my food properly this time.

Oh, cut the crap. You're not that old.

For me, "20 yeas ago" I had been in my IT career for more than half of my life already. "13 yeas" ... that's nothing, you whippersnapper!

Yikes with all this talk from you young'uns I need to get a zimmer frame!

  • So I was at the Marillion warm up show last night. Mostly a standing gig. Might be that the average age of the crowd is increasing, but during the encore one person passed out and required medical attention including CPR. There were 3 other incidents just after, inc. one related to diabetes.

The band had to stop, obviously. It was all very surreal. Two ambulance crews turned up. Everyone was fine in the end, thankfully. The band decided to play the encore, once it was agreed that all was OK.

I don't go to festivals, so this is the first time, other than someone fainting, or passed out in the corner due to too much drink, that I've witnessed anything like that. And I have been to far too many gigs.

    Rodders...

Edit: from "I do festivals" to "I don't go to festivals" !
