Are the posted questions getting worse?

So, I got roped into doing a professional development session for the local SQL Saturday.

    "Becoming a successful SQL Developer"

Never done a professional development session before. Not sure how to approach it, or what people attending will be expecting. Help? Please?

Step 1: Get an account at SQLServerCentral.com

    πŸ˜€

Step 2: Learn communication skills (written and verbal)

I think the best people never stop learning and they actually enjoy it. If a developer (or DBA) doesn't like to continually learn, they'll either be miserable or obsolete within a few years.

Most likely they'll end up both miserable and obsolete. But it probably takes more than just few years to become obsolete, because in a lot of companies the replacement rate for an RDBMS is something like once per decade.

And his forced vacation from SSC did nothing to motivate White Horse from his berating ways. Who let him back in?

Odd...I can't find it. And when going to his articles I figured I would see him in the discussion but all the discussion threads throw an error.

    Check http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic978608-392-2.aspx

    Actually, here.

Actually I think Joe is right in what he says in the post you don't like. He does of course say it somewhat forcefully and offensively.

But in the thread that djj pointed too Joe is spouting some utter rubbish, which to my mind is worse because it risks seriously misleading people. He was sufficiently wrong to make me feel obliged to reply because I suspect that very few people looking at that thread will have any idea what "declarative" means, and I don't want to see anyone swallowing Joe's absolute nonsense about functions and declarativeness.

I am not disagreeing with him, I just disagree with how he presents his message and the implied message behind what he says in that his way is the only correct way.

Even though his posts are what they are, I think posting a different perspective is great for the exact reasons Tom raised. When you do, you have to know that the babbling barrage of BS is coming your way. But, if he's steering people down the wrong road for the illusion of ANSI compliance, the other people reading the forums will benefit from corrections. The history is interesting to some, but the OCD with names is just rubbish.

  • I tried my hand at curing my own bacon for the first time. It came out of the cure Saturday morning and hit the smoker later on Saturday. I was able to slice it up and try it for the first time on Sunday. Overall a pretty good first attempt. There are some things I will tweak in my process to see if I can improve the quality. Here is a picture so you can see the fruits of my effort over the last week.

    +1

And if I look at the initial post, I tend to think more along the lines of if a person is writing many 'one time functions', maybe the design of the database could use some improvement.

Maybe I'm lost in time, but reuse seemed to always be a part of the end game.

It looks pretty good, Sean. Nice light crust, no real hardened bark and the natural pink from the smoke - Makes me want to try my own.

Yes, I will make it down there one day. I just don't know when that day will be.

Yes he did. I noticed that last week and though about going off about the obsession with table names, just for fun. Before typing a single character, I realized that would mean that I'd lost - becoming something I didn't want to be. It would contribute nothing and just isn't worth it.

  • What a way to return from a weekend...

We've got a vendor who's coming out tomorrow (despite our trying to push them back to have more prep time) to install an application for us to test. Needs a SQL back-end, last I heard from them a dedicated instance. So I'm trying to install the new instance on one of my servers and I keep getting the ever popular "could not find the database engine startup handle" error when the setup is done.

I'm thinking it's related to some of the security settings around here, and working on getting the VM into the OU with relaxed settings so I can get the install done.

Nothing like having to get an install done on short notice...

At least I've already warned my supervisor that I may not have a working, separate SQL instance for these guys tomorrow...
