So much *fun* working someplace where you have a (virtual) server in an environment where every GB of storage, every GB of RAM has to be accounted for and justified...

And giving people a list of subjects to study would help them to get to know the material, because it's more than just memorizing an answer. Right?Hahahahahahahahah... Oh, you were serious, not making a joke
I suspect that the people asking 'gimme questions and answers' aren't looking to study or get to know the material better.
How does such a list differ from 'what you need to know to be a DBA/DB dev/etc'?
That was kind of my thought on such an article. The people who ask for answers aren't willing / able / both to go "down the rabbit hole" to get more information and learn. The people who are willing to go down the rabbit hole, probably wouldn't need such an article...
Great idea, but...
Or am I being too cynical here?

Here's a thought. So many people are asking for interview questions, why don't we create a list of subjects that are often covered by interviews (possibly including links to BOL) that people can use to study?Questions vary by interviewer to interviewer, but subjects don't. And giving people a list of subjects to study would help them to get to know the material, because it's more than just memorizing an answer. Right?
Are you suggesting to have something similar to Q&A where the A means articles instead of answers? That would be a large list.
Maybe. I was sort of thinking of segregating stuff by DBA duties, even. "You want to be a general DBA that does everything? Then here's the stuff you need to know. You want to be a backup DBA, then here's the shorter subset. You want to be a production DBA ..." etc.
Or maybe a bulleted list of "If you know these items, you can answer the questions in most entry level DBA interviews. If you know these extra items, you are likely going to look good in a intermediate level interview. If you are Gail Shaw or Jeff Moden or Kimberly Tripp, you da expert and will know all about <insert obscure references here>..."

Well my thought is that there are many people who are absolutely terrified of interviews, who don't see themselves doing well no matter what they actually know. Now that doesn't account for lazy, but for the people who want to double-prep themselves because they tend to flounder when put on the spot, giving them something to refer to might help bolster their confidence. For those who might just want the confidence of walking into an interview knowing they'll be grilled on MDX and yes, that additional study proved that they do actually know the subject better than they remember.

So do I. On the other hand, however, after years of working in the IT industry I finally feel confident in my interviewing skills. I just wish it hadn't taken so long for me to get to this point.

Add me to that list. I wish more interviewers were competent in SQL to the point where they knew how to interview someone for a SQL Server position. I know there are sometimes multiple levels of interviews and that there have been several discussions on this topic, but it's still a problem.

It's just another skill that you need to practice. Go on every interview you can - even those where you already know that you don't want that job - just to do the interview. For those where you know you don't want the job, feel free to turn the tables on them. Go on all of these interviews until you would feel comfortable enough to sit back, put your feet up on the table, and do the interview that way. Now, you're ready to go on serious interviews.

That's great advice that I'd like to be able to put in practice but the truth is potential employers always schedule interviews during business hours which means taking personal time from my current job just to 'practice' interviews.

That is true. I guess it comes down to figuring out how important it is to you, and to handle it accordingly.

On the section I emboldened above, I suggest really high caution. It's a really small world and the next job you apply for a couple of years down the road might also have a new employee that was there when you turned the tables and goes out of their way to do the same to you. I have had that "new employee" appear at one of my interviews and I thanked my lucky stars that I had impressed him previously because he IS my boss on the dream job that I now have.

Well that's a pity - if only for the fact I won't being playing the annual game of 'Looking for Jack?' 😉
See I knew you jinked it last year by being at the bar the first night I turned up haha
