Are the posted questions getting worse?

I need some SSIS script task help (2008 / 2012) over on this thread here. All assistance would be appreciated.

Google doesn't seem to recognize the first error at all and the third error is so generic (and sometimes throws on my machine because TFS is stupid even when a file exists)... The frustration is threatening to set in.

Format everything and reinstall. If that doesn't work, buy new equipment. If it still doesn't work, consider working on Uber. πŸ˜€

(Hope you find a better solution)

Thank you Mr. Moden. Another interview cut short with the simple "Name one way to get the current system time from sql server".

"That's easy, if it is IBM iSeries then just press the centre blue button under the display":-D

    😎

And when asked about SSIS, SSAS and SSRS the response was "I don't really have much experience with those". I told them I was a little surprised since those terms were on their resume no less than a dozen times each.

Probably the experience was watching someone else work on them or writing them on the resume.

Luis, if all of life's problems were that easily solved, we'd all be driving for Uber. @=)

Thank you Mr. Moden. Another interview cut short with the simple "Name one way to get the current system time from sql server".

This would have saved us a little time yesterday. The candidate failed all eight of the simple questions. No idea what was on the cv but these questions are only given to TSQL candidates claiming a good deal of experience.

Oh, dear. Now you have me wanting to know the questions to see if I could answer them... Not that I've ever claimed a "good deal" of experience. I'd say I'm fair to middlin'.

  • Hey guys just to let you know few things. Firstly if you recall I wrote my first ever article on SQL dashboards last year, well I have moved the project to code plex so anyone can use it.

Secondly I am in the process of building an iTunes U SQL podcasts library where I will be doing couple modules on basic SQL topics ( nothing like the stuff I went to on sqlskills training) followed by quick fire tests. Anyone interested let me know I will message them once done. Happy Easter.

Having heard Jeff talk about how few people can answer this I decided to give it a try. So far 0 for 2. We are not hiring a DBA or anything that deal exclusively with sql. We are hiring for a developer. But in our shop the developers all deal with sql routinely. It is amazing to read things like "complex stored procedures and triggers". Then can't answer the simple things like how to get the current time. The best response to a question so far was this one. I asked them to briefly explain sql injection and some ways we can prevent it. After watching the person struggle for a couple minutes they started talking about how we can leverage sql injection dependency to improve performance. I somehow managed to keep a straight face as they made this up. :w00t:

I don't want to be held responsible for you messing up your monitor with whatever you're currently consuming Brandie. Honestly, they were incredibly simple. The score for each one was 0 or 1. That simple. To be a little more specific, the answer to one of them was

SELECT UserID, cnt = COUNT(*) FROM Users GROUP BY UserID.

The question wasn't in the least bit cryptic - and yet the candidate introduced the other table into his query.

When in doubt, just join in all the tables!!

    <headdesk>

One of my coworkers just came up with the worst joke ever.

Three DBAs walk into a NoSQL bar. Soon after, they leave - they couldn't join a table!

    Will G.

That's similar to the old joke:

A DBA walks in to a bar, sees a set of tables, walks up to them and asks, "may I join you?"

"I cant stress enough the importance of switching from a sequential files mindset to set-based thinking. After you make the switch, you can spend your time tuning and optimizing your queries instead of maintaining lengthy, poor-performing code."

I know the struggle to keep the straight face. I've watched people trying to explain the difference between JOIN and INNER JOIN or LEFT JOIN and LEFT OUTER JOIN. And those were for SQL only positions.

How many of you contractors have been so taken with a gig that you've signed up as a permie? I just did. I never expected that.

The idea of presenting fills me with irrational fear, and yet yesterday I gave a one-hour presentation on query tuning and execution plan basics to an alarmingly large group here in the biggest meeting room we have ("we"! Did you notice that?), and it wasn't too bad. They want more, Tuning Tuesdays, every other week. I never expected that.

    Congrats Chris,

    Haven't been tempted myself yet!

    Cheers,

    Rodders...

In a previous place, I was offered the "opportunity" of a permie job doing the contract work that I'd just signed up for. I turned that down, and ended up working a *very* long contract... And I still think I made the right choice, given the way the firm in question is going!

It's nice when it happens that way round too!

    Rodders...
