Are the posted questions getting worse?

On one hand, I'm glad I no longer code in C, on the other hand, lots of work available: http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/02/extremely-severe-bug-leaves-dizzying-number-of-apps-and-devices-vulnerable/

WOW. That is going to take a long time to unravel from the sounds of it.

Maybe people had to actually get some work done. No, that can't be it. :hehe:

  • Just kill me now. I have been working on a pretty large and complicated ETL process for the past couple months to support our new ERP that we are going to start testing in a couple months. I just found out that the system which is the source data for this ETL is being upgraded to a new version "in a couple months". This is not a minor upgrade. It is a whole new set of servers and they changed the entire engine and database structure that drives the whole thing. I am now in a hover pattern until this new version is installed so I can throw away 6 of the last 8 weeks of effort. :w00t:

    Could be worse...

They could've told you a couple months from now that they were upgrading to a new version.

  • No need to pile on (in fact, please don't) but the post below reminds me of the interviews that I've conducted over the last decade. The problem is, it's actually getting worse. It's really getting to be a much more prevalent and totally disgusting fact of life and I refuse to "give in" to it on interviews.

It's scary to hear that things are getting worse. I haven't had to conduct an interview for five years now. But five years ago, the overwhelming majority of the people I interviewed were not qualified to the level that they thought they were. It's creepy how people can get 6-9 months of experience and then multiply that out to 5 years and think they actually have 5 years of experience.

Work is something I've done a good job of avoiding while on vacation. It's been a genuine pleasure to only get online to check the thread and not much else. My phone hasn't rang once and the only texts I've received have been about dinner reservations. Add to that the fact that I've been in sunny Florida wearing shorts in 75 F weather and it's been a truly awesome week. My daughter has more memories to last a lifetime. I need more relaxing weeks like this in my life.

Knowing what I know about the ERP you're working with, my condolences, Sean. If memory serves regarding the one of those I had to go through with that system, your base tables won't change but your data types will. I guess they call that "job security" for the people who do the work. I called it a huge pain. Best of luck, sir.

Thanks Ed. Actually this one is going the other direction and the upgrade is to a third party system. I am actually extracting data from the ERP for this system where they have their own ETL process to pick up data from some staging tables and massage it into their own version of insanity. But the pain is the same either way. :w00t:
