Ack what a rough start to the week. My dog went for "last outs" about midnight last night and found a skunk. This is the second time in about 3-4 months. Was up for another hour or so cleaning him and then taking a shower. Working from home today since I smell even worse than normal.

Then my dad got news that the tumor in his bladder is very aggressive cancer. They are going to take his bladder and create a new one from part of his intestines. Sounds pretty crazy to me but they say he has a very good chance at a full recovery.

Hoping this week turns out sometime soon.

Yes that is a rough start to the week. But I should thank you for putting some perspective on my complaints.

How very true. My problems don't even seem slightly significant any more.

All the best to your father, Sean. I hope he recovers fully.

Thanks all. To be honest I am pretty upbeat about the whole situation. The surgery he has to have is apparently somewhat rare but has been around for a long time. The doctor said there is no sign of anything outside of his bladder he is very optimistic that this surgery will be the end of it.

On another topic, you passed through my head this weekend Ed. We have a neighborhood pub crawl a couple times a year. We hosted last time so were not on the list of houses until one of our neighbors had a death in the family and couldn't make it so we stepped in last minute as a host house. Our local meat market is the old style meat market where they butcher everything there and most cuts of meat are cut right in front of you. They all know me there pretty well because I will often take some random cuts and lesser known pieces with glee. A couple of the butchers there will sometimes tell me right when I walk in they have something for me.

At any rate...they cure their own bacon and took some of that and ground it into their ground chuck making bacon burger. Which made an unbelievably good burger. I took that and mixed it with their pork sausage and rolled it into little meatballs. Then stuffed them with mozzarella, gave them a good rubbing and tossed them on the smoker with nothing but grapevine. Wowza!!!

Since I know you and I have the same smoker, have you done anything to protect it from the weather? I never found a decent cover for it and it has some issues. The ring at the bottom rusted through so bad that most of it fell out through the bottom. I think I can get a cast iron skillet and cut out the bottom to make a ring to hold the chip tray but it is only a matter of time until it collapses.

The smoked meatballs with bacon sounds absolutely delicious. I've ground bacon into burgers before and it definitely works well, but never thought of adding it to meatballs for smoking. Thanks for sharing - I'm going to try that one day. And your butcher sounds great - hang on to that.

Yes, I protect the smoker from the weather. At my house, I have a "basement garage" in addition to the normal garage. There's a door off the main part of the basement that goes to an unheated room in the basement that's actually a small one-car garage, complete with a small overhead door leading to the outside. It's good for storing patio furniture, lawn equipment. I store my smoker there. While it doesn't live in a heated environment, it's completely protected from the weather and the smell doesn't get into the rest of the house.

I know what you mean about covers - they're all but a necessity when you have a grill outside all year. I think I remember seeing a cover once where I remarked to my wife that it would fit the smoker. I think it was at one of two stores on one of our "up north" weekend trips. I'll keep an eye out for one the next time we're up there. If I find it again, I can send you one.

  • My Thoughts and Prayers, Sean. Hope things go smoothly and he improves.

  • Thanks everyone for all the kind words. I am a very positive person and this situation with my father is no exception. The doctor thinks it is highly likely to go well so I am not letting myself get overly worried.

The dog is starting to smell better and so is the house. Still a bit skunky but a few more days and it should be like new again.

I had a brief look at this one. A rather unsavoury 'workaround' did come to mind, so I quickly moved along.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad...I hope everything goes well with him and his surgery.

Also, sorry to hear about your dog's skunk meetings......cleaning up after one of those sprays is no fun at all.

Looks like it turned out to be SSMS incompatibility. Was using SSMS 2012 instead of SSMS 2014.

Heh - Only you would have come up with that one from the error. I don't know how and, quite honestly, I don't want to know. 😉

I didn't, Jacob Wilkins is the one who suggested it.

Wow, does that mean you have competition for the crystal ball? You've hit a shot in the dark so many times with SS that I've lost count.

  • After reading through the "Antiquated SQL Backups" topic, with some of the hassles I've been having with backups (managed by someone else, with a third party product, which is fighting for resources with a different backup product for the desktops,) I'm really looking into talking to my boss about "going it alone." Of course, across all my (current) servers, I'd need to request around 13.5TB if I wanted to keep a months worth of backups (I'd probably be OK cutting it to two weeks,) plus pushing to get SQL Backup Pro (Red Gate) for each server...

But it might be worth it.

They're supposed to be throwing hardware at the backup contention issue, but of course there's hold-ups on that. I'm thinking if things don't get resolved after we finish moving to Win2012R2 / SQL2014, I'll move this one to the front burner and push for it...

Indeed. Alas, I'm a bit busy with Other Things this weekend - playing double bass for a run of "The Magic Flute" at the University here in Leeds, UK. Mozart, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Riiiight. Still, it saves on set dressing, apparently, and given the pitiful budget that the OperaSoc has to work with, that's just as well.

First night is tonight. It's going to be a loooooong week.
