So the other day I was paying bills, and got curious about my electric bill. It was easily 2x what it had been last year at the same time. My first thought was, they raised the rates and I didn't notice, so I looked back at previous bills. August, my bills doubled! The problem was, I couldn't pull up the detailed bills from then to see what the rate was.

Then I got thinking, something *else* had changed in August...

I'd gotten my shiny new (used) PowerEdge R900 with 4x quad core Xeons, 64GB of RAM, dual 1200w power supplies...

    Hmm...

So, to test, I've shut it down for the month. Last night I fired up an app our electric company has that will show you your daily / weekly / monthly electric usage and took a look. There was a difference of 10kw/h use between the day the server was shut down, and the previous day...

Not quite enough to cover the entire increase I think, but enough to put a dent in it (I think the new NAS I put in is probably the other chunk, and I can't shut the NAS down.)

Sigh, so my fun toy is now a "gotta go plug it in before I can use it for stuff, and unplug it when I'm done" toy. I don't want to leave it plugged in when it's off, as the power supplies will still draw some power (and I'm too lazy right now to figure out how to get the DRAC card in it to handle powering on / off remotely)

Anyone want a nice rack-mount server?

DRACs are great when you have to power cycle remote servers, especially in hostile country.

So, Jason's basement is a hostile country now? Hmm... time to make some invasion plans. :w00t::w00t:

Might be time to start building a wind farm to support the server farm!

Does seem a bit high if the server is idle most of the time.

I wonder if generating bitcoins would be a good test to see if it can pay for itself.

I was present at that conversation. It was hilarious. The odd thing was that the recipe didn't mention velocity or propellant in any way. 😛

In all seriousness, it was a good event. I got to meet a few new people and most of the sessions I went to were good. Some good, some great.

  • Ack what a rough start to the week. My dog went for "last outs" about midnight last night and found a skunk. This is the second time in about 3-4 months. Was up for another hour or so cleaning him and then taking a shower. Working from home today since I smell even worse than normal.

Then my dad got news that the tumor in his bladder is very aggressive cancer. They are going to take his bladder and create a new one from part of his intestines. Sounds pretty crazy to me but they say he has a very good chance at a full recovery.

Hoping this week turns out sometime soon.
