Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • FYI, Amazon has crystal balls for a decent price, if anybody needs one. 🙂

This is, potentially, the longest thread on the Internet. I'm not sure I've seen anything continue this long, for this length. We were, by far, the largest user of this forum software, and larger than any other .NET forums I've seen.

And yet, the site still works. Sure, it has the quote bug and a glitch or slowdown from time to time, but just look at it. I'd say it's a job well done.

Tell me The Thread's award is not that it's going to be killed off. I've come to enjoy it. It's a lot like a pressure release valve that releases pressure slowly to prevent explosions. I know I don't want to explode. 😉

Look at all the cool things to come out of The Thread. There's the Pork Chop Launcher (plus variants), DBCC TIMEWARP and the Hippo Guarding the Tent in the Dessert.

Cool things? I wonder how many other threads keep referring to crystal balls and silver spoons? 😎

    DBCC COUNT_SPOONS

    😎

DBCC COUNT_SPOONS returns a 0 on my system.

A common misconception is that the return value is an integer, it isn't, it's a 64 floating point number, fully IEEE 754 compliant, the values you would be looking for are between the 48th and 52nd bits of the fraction section, IEEE recognizes that no one will hold greater supplies of spoons than this counts for.

    😎

    DBCC COUNT_SPOONS

Returns 0, no matter when it's run or with what parameters.

IIRC there is a Connect for this one

Sitting in a meeting at Redgate talking about plans for SQL Server Central. THE THREAD has come up as a topic. We are currently a 65mb thread. It evidently looks like "an exponentially growing log file."

    All I can say is...

    WELL DONE!

Keep it up. Good job everyone.

At 1.273 Kb a post that is not very efficient, you should hire a proper performance and optimization consultants:-D

    😎

65 milli-bits is actually extremely small and sits somewhere in the realms of quantum storage.

    An average of a post

Any compression algorithm would do a good job on this, even PKZIP manages this below 320 bytes. That would bring the Thread down to a tweet or 15.67 Mb.

    Officially added to our list.

Does that mean there should also be a DBCC COUNT_BALLS?

I missed if anyone ever found the crystal ball?

It's in a quantum state. At best, sufficient need can collapse its waveform temporarily and cause a sudden burst of clarity, but it will always go back to unknown location, unknown momentum after a short time.

Thanks. Everything is now crystal clear.

  • I find it slightly irritating that this fellow asks a question (not clearly) gets some good feedback from SQL MVPs and is combative. Plus, he uses far too many "!".

Now, if I'm getting some suggestions or recommendations from someone such as Grant, Gail, or Hugo I would be a little more on the appreciative side rather than combative. Hence, my suggestion to take his conversation to an Oracle forum (some are known for their snarky-ness).

Now I wonder, does this fellow have a Dev or QA environment where he can run some tests? Or does he plan on implementing whatever solution he chooses straight into Prod?
