Are the posted questions getting worse?

I have an awesome opportunity to be a guest lecturer at ASU in Tempe, Arizona for their computer program. My employer is partnering with the university to provide guest lecturers from the real world into the university classrooms.

A look at the curriculum indicates the IT program for the next few semesters is definitely programing oriented and object-based programming at that. So I'm going to write up a proposal for including a relational database lecture in their capstone class.

I hope they welcome that, because an IT course toally directed towards object-based programming is fundamentally flawed - adding some relational stuff into it will be a big improvement. Unfortunately, I think there's a risk they don't want to know - too much of the academic world is hooked on one or another of the numerous over-hyped things driven by technically clueless computer journalists and object-based programming (which has added nothing at all new to the programming world since at least a decade before the term object-oriented or object-based was coined) is one of those most abjectly worshipped pieces of over-hyped nonsense.

It's been a while since I took CIS classes, so can anyone here give me insight on what's going on in the college classrooms these days and how I can tailor my proposal to fit?

I've never been near such classes, and when I lectured it was about style or about algorithms, not anything as general sounding as CIS, so I can't tell you anything useful about what went on when I was an academic, let alone what's going on these days.

Then again, he could just keep stumbling on the one or two bad eggs on the forums who make everyone look bad.

You mean like Phil Parkin, Jeff Moden and Gail Shaw? Yes, they make me look bad. 😀

Thanks a lot for the vote of confidence. But I really don't belong in the same sentence as those two.

You're one of the best posters on SSIS, and you were on one of the threads Simon participated.

Are you sure that the email for Manchester went out? I have not received any mails for this event, and I would have submitted sessions if I had? (As I have for the Belgium event, obviously)

I was notified via an email on Thursday. The email address used was sqlsaturday418@sqlsaturday.com. A little confusing, as that is the SQLSaturday number for last year's conference.

    I'm a previous attendee and I haven't received it.

Also, when I look at the website it appears not to be listed, despite Rodders statement that it is (or does his "still" indicate that he intended to type "not" but left it out?)

Yes, I think it may have been my ("you can, but you shouldn't") response to his post that sent him over the edge.

But at least he referred to me as one of the five-star posters, which can't be bad. I'll celebrate with a few cleansing ales soon.

5 star poster here is better than any poster on the post office walls. 😀

Have an extra one just for having one of the coolest signature blocks. 😉

    Edit: Yes, both parts.

  • With that I am off to my son's school. He is in the spelling bee again this year. I think he is the only student in his grade to make the spelling bee all 3 years he is eligible. Here's hoping he doesn't go out on an easy word again this year. In third grade he was 5th overall in the school. Last year he went out early by misspelling "domestic". I just want him to relax and enjoy the ride while doing the best he can.

There's also the very first SQL Saturday in Belgium on March 19th, for people wanting to come over.

I'd like to get there, because it's so long since I've been in Belgium (and I've never been nearer to Antwerp that Brussels except when driving straight past on the way from Dunquerque to Amsterdam, so I would see somewhere new), but I've committed to be elsewhere from 15th to 30th March.

Enjoy. Hard to get kids to relax, but hopefully you get some great memories. My son barely remembers 5th grade GeoBee and he went to state, but he remembers enjoying it.

    I don’t see it.

    Where is it?

Or will you please unsubscribe me? That was way over the top. I’m glad I’ve ignored you so long.

Was that in response to today's editorial?

I didn't see anything wrong with the editorial, but maybe reading has gone down. 😉
