Are the posted questions getting worse?

First, it's amazing to me what people will put on a resume even though they have no clue. That's also the most frustrating part of all of this.

People putting outright lies on resumes has become so common that I expect it's more normal than honesty nowadays.

Then again, the requirements have also gotten so outrageous that there's only 1 person who meets them all and they don't want to move. My favorites are the ones who want impossible experience. For example, 5 years experience with SQL Server 2014.

The impossible requirements have been around for a very long time. These are all genuine examples fro the UK: -

In 2002, we fell about laughing at "At least 5 years experience of C#".

In 2000, the best joke was "5 years experience of MS SQL Server, at least 3 of them with SQL Server 2000".

In 1996, it was a competition between "substantial experience of standard C++" (first C++ standard was 1998, I think), or "4 years experience of software development using C++ and the Standard Template Library" (STL you could actually use dates from 1994).

In 1975 I was looking at job adverts to see if there was somewhere interesting to go (I decided to not to change employers, as ICL could offer more fun) and saw a position for someone with at least 10 years experience of BCPL (I had first come across the language in 1967 at a session at the Cambridge Maths Lab given by Martin Richards after he came back from his visit to Project MAC during which he had written the first compiler for his language in the spring of that year, and I knew he hadn't published the full language definition until 1969).

I can't remember any instances earlier than that, but I'm sure that there were. But it seems quite clear that DBCC TIMEWARP was already being used by 1966, more than half a century before it was written.

Ah, yes. The joys of holiday eating. I too have indulged and need to shed the two pounds of sweets I ate. I also saw Force Awakens. Now I can subscribe to the Emo Kylo Ren twitter account and not feel like I'm getting spoilers. @=)

Hope everyone had a good holiday and no one was in Dubai when the hotel caught fire. Or at least, if you were that you weren't hurt by it.

A bit late, but best wishes for everyone!

And a bit later still, the same from sunny P. del C.

Les deseo un feliz y prospero aƱo nuevo a todos.

It's been a nice mild beginning to the year - shirt-sleeve weather for the fireworks down by the sea starting at 01:00 on 1st, and it's been over 25C (77F) every afternoon since then (was 80F early pm today in the garden, down to 70F now).

It sounds beautiful. I'm at 24 F and snow right now.

  • I did the dumbest thing over this past weekend...

As I had a 4 day weekend (woohoo!) I didn't get to sleep anywhere close to my usual time, instead I was staying up until 2-3am.

Well, I'm paying for it today. I'm half-ready to put my head down on my desk and nap, and da*m the consequences...

I know what you mean. My last day of work before today was December 23rd. And I routinely didn't make it to bed until 2-3am. Gosh I haven't done that in a LONG time.

It's spitting snow outside my window.

  • I stayed up way longer than normal during the holiday break, but I forced myself to get in the bed (and sleep) on my 'normal' time so I'd be back on my schedule.

My wife and I did a big move just before Christmas - went from hot Arizona (Chandler - SE of Phoenix) to cold Arizona (Dewey - outside Prescott). A 2-hour drive difference and 20 degree temperature change. So we've spent the holiday break unpacking boxes and trying to get things set up and arranged how we want them. Thank goodness for being able to work from home.

I did the same thing. This morning sure did come early, didn't it? :w00t:

I have a co-worker who just left Florida and is driving home to Michigan. He's going from 80 F to 24 F and snow in one day. I told him to prepare for a shock. Hopefully it doesn't send him into shock.
